Early polling showed Rubio, who was considered a potential candidate for vice president by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012, as a frontrunner candidate for the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 2016 since at least the end of the 2012 election. Non-voting delegates from the District of Columbia and four of the five inhabited U.S. territories were also elected. On Election Day, Republicans had held a House majority since January 2011.

The 2024 United States Senate election in Virginia will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia. Incumbent Democratic Senator Tim Kaine is running against nonprofit founder Hung Cao for re-election to a third term in office. Kaine was re-elected with 57.0% of the vote in 2018. Primary elections took place on June 18, 2024.

Former president Donald Trump was nominated for president of the United States for a third consecutive election cycle.

The 2024 Florida Republican presidential primary was held on March 19, 2024, as part of the Republican Party primaries for the 2024 presidential election. 125 delegates to the 2024 Republican National Convention were allocated on a winner-take-all basis. The contest was held alongside primaries in Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, and Ohio.

The 2024 South Carolina Republican presidential primary was held on February 24, 2024, as part of the Republican Party primaries for the 2024 presidential election. 50 delegates to the 2024 Republican National Convention were allocated on a selection basis.

The contest was held on Super Tuesday alongside primaries in 14 other states. Donald Trump won most of the counties along with all 40 delegates, but Nikki Haley won Salt Lake and Davis counties.
