Electrocution

On March 6, 1908, the state senate passed a house bill replacing local hangings with electrocution at the state penitentiary. [126] The state's final hanging took place on April 9, 1909, when Joel Payne, a black man, was hanged for the murder of his father-in-law Reed Swaine in Bedford. [125] Virginia was the first Southern state to switch from hanging to electrocution. [127]
