List of Arkansas townships

Last updated

This list of Arkansas Townships is based on the U. S. Census (2000) list of places in Arkansas. There are also former townships that have been combined with others or absorbed by urban expansion.

Contents

Arkansas counties are divided into townships. Each township includes unincorporated space and some may have one or more incorporated towns or cities. Incorporated municipalities can and often do straddle township (and sometimes even county) lines.

Townships in Arkansas have very limited functions. They are used as electoral districts for a Constable. [1] Most counties have now designated districts for these offices, which may ignore township boundaries. Nevertheless, the names are of considerable use to genealogists and historians because the United States Census is enumerated by township. This allows researchers to see the numbers of people in a specific section of a county based on the US Census.

A civil township is a widely used unit of local government in the United States that is subordinate to a county, most often in the northern and midwestern parts of the country. The term town is used in New England, New York, and Wisconsin to refer to the equivalent of the civil township in these states; Minnesota uses "town" officially but often uses it and "township" interchangeably. Specific responsibilities and the degree of autonomy vary in each state. Civil townships are distinct from survey townships, but in states that have both, the boundaries often coincide and may completely geographically subdivide a county. The U.S. Census Bureau classifies civil townships as minor civil divisions. Currently, there are 20 states with civil townships.

A township in some states of the United States is a small geographic area.
