The Indian Federal Democratic Party was a political party in India. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections IFDP won one seat from Kerala P. C. Thomas Defeating Jose K. Mani of Kerala Congress (M). That was the first parliamentary electoral victory of a National Democratic Alliance member in the state.

On 2005, IFDP merged with the Kerala Congress of P.J Joseph. A breakaway faction of IFDP led by M. P. George split from the party. In 2014, this faction merged with All India Forward Bloc. [1] [2]

It is one of the two major political alliances in Kerala, the other being Congress-led UDF, each of which has been in power alternately for the last four decades. LDF has won the elections to the State Legislature of Kerala in the years 1980, 1987, 1996, 2006, 2016 and had a historic re-election in 2021 where an incumbent government was re-elected for first time in 40 years. The alliance consists of CPI(M), CPI, KC(M), NCP, JD(S) and various smaller parties.

M.P. George was the Kerala state President of Indian Federal Democratic Party (IFDP). He is leading a splinter faction of IFDP. When P. C. Thomas merge IFDP with Kerala Congress (Joseph), M. P. George retained IFDP. In 2014, with an aim for Nationalism, Federalism and Socialism, IFDP merged with All India Forward Bloc.

1980 Kerala Legislative Assembly election

Elections were held on 1980 January 3 and 5 to elect members to the sixth Niyamasabha. This election saw the formation of two pre-poll alliances, viz. LDF and UDF, most of whose constituent parties were part of the erstwhile United Front. CPI(M)-led LDF to win the election, after winning 93 seats altogether. E. K. Nayanar was sworn in as the Chief Minister on 26 March 1980

The Kerala Congress has suffered severe divisions and several factions, and a number of parties have emerged over the years, all claiming the name Kerala Congress in various times in its history. Factions include Kerala Congress (Joseph) under P. J. Joseph, Kerala Congress (Mani) under K. M. Mani, Kerala Congress under R. Balakrishna Pillai, and Kerala Congress (Jacob) under T. M. Jacob.
