Socialism in the United States |

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is a political nonprofit organization, not a political party with a ballot line. DSA members and endorsees usually run as members of the Democratic Party, and occasionally with the Green Party, Working Families Party, or as independents.[ citation needed ]
Both national DSA and local DSA chapters can endorse candidates. DSA has no membership requirements, so anyone can join DSA. [1]
The list below contains 212 individuals elected to public office who are endorsed by DSA National, endorsed by a DSA local chapter, or are members of DSA.
In the 2017 elections, DSA members were elected to 15 state and local offices, [2] for a total of 35 members in office. [3]
In April 2018, 40 DSA members held elected office. [4] In the 2018 midterm elections, DSA members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib were elected to the United States House of Representatives. [5] DSA endorsed 93 state and local candidates, of which 50 won their primaries, [6] [7] and 40 won their general election. [8]
In 2019, 71 DSAers held office. [9]
In the 2020 elections, DSA members Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush were elected to the House [10] and at least 36 DSA members won office, earning more than 3.1 million votes. [11] In total, 101 DSAers held office. [9] As a result, the list of socialists in Congress was longer than ever in US history [12] and the number of socialist electeds was higher than any time since 1912, [9] when the Socialist Party of America held over 1,000 offices.
In October 2022, DSA had elected over 120 candidates to local office. [13]
In August 2023, DSA had "close to 160" endorsed politicians in office. [14] In August 2023, DSA claimed that 207 DSA members held elected office, including state and local offices. [15] In January 2024, DSA claimed "over 200 elected officials spanning every level of government" were affiliated with DSA. [16]
In 2025, there were over 250 DSA members in office, with 90% elected after 2019. [17] From 2016 to 2025, 128 nationally-endorsed candidates won an election, and 31 DSA endorsed ballot initiatives passed into law. [18]

For reasons known only to himself, he joined DSA — anyone can join the organization. DSA's open membership policy makes the distinction between being a self-selecting member and a group-endorsed politician especially salient and critical. Neither Thanedar's local chapter nor the national organization ever endorsed his campaign. Searches for his name on the organization's local and national websites turn up nothing; they've never touted his membership, a pointed omission given that he's a sitting US congressman. [....] Thanedar personally escorted Prime Minister Modi to Congress for the address. Unsurprisingly, Thanedar's local branch of DSA voted to expel him from the organization in September.
A full list of the candidates who won can be found below along with some of their statements: Vanessa Agudelo (I) [....] Scott Alberts (D) [....] Lee Carter (D) [....] Charles Decker (D) [....] Ben Ewen-Campen (D) [....] Kara Gloe (I) School Board, Moorhead MN [....] Ross Grooters(I) [....] Denise Joy (I) [....] Kristin LaLonde (I) [....] Brian Nowak (D/WF) [....] Anita Prizio (D) [....] Tristan Rader (D) [....] Carlina Rivera (D) [....] JT Scott (I) [....] Seema Singh Perez (I)
In the state and municipal elections across the country on November 7, 15 DSA members won their races, bringing the total number of DSA members in elective office to around 35, as high as it's ever been.
If any DSA members do taste victory come November, they would join around 40 others who currently hold elected office nationwide.
DSA chapters endorsed 93 state and local candidates in 2018, according to the national group. Of those, 43 lost their primaries, but 50 are advancing to the general election after either winning or facing no competition in the primary season.
There are currently 71 DSA members holding public office. This year, one was defeated for reelection and two did not run for reelection. Another 33 DSAers were elected this year for the first time, bringing the total to 101 when the new winners take office in January. This is greater than at any time since about 1912, when the Socialist Party had a strong foothold in both urban and rural America.
At least 48 DSA members were on the ballot this November, and at least 36 won office, earning more than 3.1 million votes for socialist candidates altogether.
Though New York remains its stronghold, DSA has elected more than 120 candidates to local office nationwide—including six socialists to the Chicago City Council, four to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and two to State Senate in Minnesota.
There are close to 160 Democratic Socialists of America–backed politicians in elected office nationwide.
On February 3rd, DSA is launching our national Trans Rights and Bodily Autonomy Campaign Commission with a mass virtual call, where we're honored to welcome Montana DSA endorsed Rep. Zooey Zephyr and trans journalist Erin Reed. [....] With nearly 100,000 members, 150+ chapters, and over 200 elected officials spanning every level of government, DSA is ready to fight for you.
A spokesperson for the Detroit chapter of DSA told Forbes in a statement that Thanedar's "views are not—and have never been—representative of Detroit DSA." Thanedar was expelled from the chapter last month "due to his support of the far right, violent, Islamophobic Modi regime in India," the spokesperson said.
