The 23rd Senate District of Wisconsin is one of 33 districts in the Wisconsin Senate. [1] Located in northwest Wisconsin, the district comprises all of Barron, Clark, Price, Rusk, and Taylor counties, with most of Chippewa County, northern Dunn County, and parts of northwest Marathon County. The district is mostly rural, but contains the cities of Bloomer, Ladysmith, Medford, Neillsville, and Rice Lake. [2]

Current elected officials

Jesse James is the senator representing the 23rd district since January 2023. He previously served in the State Assembly, representing the 68th Assembly district from 2019 to 2023. [3] [4] After the 2024 redistricting, James no longer resides in the new district.

Each Wisconsin State Senate district is composed of three Wisconsin State Assembly districts. The 23rd Senate district comprises the 67th, 68th, and 69th Assembly districts. The current representatives of those districts are:

The 23rd Senate district crosses two congressional districts. The portion of the district in Dunn County and the northwest part of Chippewa County fall within Wisconsin's 3rd congressional district, which is represented by U.S. Representative Derrick Van Orden. The remainder of the district falls within Wisconsin's 7th congressional district, which is represented by U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany. [5]

He was previously a member of the Wisconsin Assembly, representing the 68th district from 2005 to 2009. In March 2018, Moulton announced that he would be retiring from the senate and was endorsing Representative Kathy Bernier to be his successor.

Kathleen M. "Kathy" Bernier is an American politician in Wisconsin who served as a member of the Wisconsin State Senate representing the 23rd district from 2019–2023. She previously was the Chippewa County Clerk from 1998–2011, and served in the Wisconsin State Assembly for the 68th district from 2011 to 2019. In March 2018, Bernier announced that she would run to represent the 23rd district in the Wisconsin State Senate, an open seat due to the retirement of Terry Moulton. She was elected in the November election.

Before being elected to the Assembly, James was the police and fire chief of Altoona, Wisconsin.

The 2022 Wisconsin Senate elections were held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Seventeen of the 33 seats in the Wisconsin State Senate were up for election—the odd-numbered districts. This was the first election to take place after redistricting following the 2020 United States census. Before the election, 21 Senate seats were held by Republicans and 12 seats were held by Democrats. 11 Republican seats and 6 Democratic seats were up in this election. The primary election took place on August 9, 2022.
