Indiana County Athletic Conferences

Last updated

There were numerous conferences within the IHSAA that were made up of schools based entirely in one county. Many of these "County Conferences" also contained schools from neighboring counties that were either geographically closer or smaller than the other schools in their home county. These conferences would fold when schools would consolidate and seek out other, more expansive conferences that included similar-sized schools. The starting date of many of these conferences is hard to confirm, so the listing for many of these leagues uses the earliest date that can be confirmed.

Contents

Adams County Conference

This conference predates the end of World War II, and most of its members shared membership with the Eastern Indiana Conference (EIC). The last non-EIC member closed in 1956, and this county league folded the next year.

Bartholomew-Shelby County League

Originally the Shelby County League, the conference became a rare arrangement where all of the non-city schools from two counties played in the same conference in 1928, as Clifford and Hope became the only two schools remaining from the Bartholomew County Conference. Rather than just absorbing the two schools, the league rebranded under the BSCL moniker. [1] Once Hauser left in 1961, the league took the old SCL name for three seasons, until the three remaining schools rejoined Hauser in the Mid-Hoosier Conference.

Hamilton County Conference

Originally a 10-team conference located in Hamilton County (though Sheridan's attendance zone included a township in Boone County), consolidation and attendance disparities forced the remaining four schools to part ways. Noblesville became independent for some years, while the other three schools (including the newly formed Hamilton Heights, and Fishers, renamed as Hamilton Southeastern) left for the Mid-Capital.

  3. Sheridan played in both the HCC and the Hoosier Conference 1948-65.
  4. Jackson Central played in both the HCC and CDC 1961-65.

Marion County Athletic Association

The first attempt by the township schools in Marion County to organize competition, the league organized a basketball tournament in the winter of 1928, then organized a season schedule in the 1928-29 school year. The league broke up in 1945, as all but three schools had found other conferences to join. The schools would all later reunite (minus Southport) in the Central Suburban Conference in 1971, though this would only last a few years. Today the Township schools are either in Conference Indiana or the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference.

Warren County Conference

A small, triangular conference (with only three schools in the county) for most of its existence, the conference existed in two versions with the same schools (opting not to compete from 1934 to 1947, as all members were within the Midwest Conference). While Seeger started as a renaming of West Lebanon in 1959 rather than a consolidation, it is given its own entry, since its nickname and colors were different as well.

The schools were based in Benton, Fountain, Jasper, Newton, Tippecanoe, Warren, and White counties. The forming of the Kankakee Valley Conference the next year caused a slight fluctuation over the next couple of years, as schools realigned themselves within the two leagues, with some schools claiming dual membership. The Mississinewa Valley Conference was an IHSAA-sanctioned conference based in East Central Indiana that lasted between 1952 and 1977. The conference started out as a conference for larger rural schools as a way to provide a higher level of competition than their respective County Conferences typically provided. The conference was stable for its first decade, but consolidation and more regionally based conferences with schools of similar sizes had schools defecting the MVC. The conference ended in 1977, with three schools forming the Classic Athletic Conference, and one team each joining the Mid-Eastern and Mid-Indiana conferences.

The Southeastern Indiana Conference was an IHSAA-sanctioned conference that existed from 1930 to 1958.

The only two non-consolidation additions were North Central in 1962, and Cannelton in 1974. Membership had shrank to five schools in 1976 when four schools combined to form Crawford County. Because of the league's limited offerings, the schools would also compete within their county-based leagues. The league would fold in 1967, as consolidation had whittled the league to three schools.

The Eastern Wabash Valley Conference was a short-lived IHSAA-sanctioned conference located in Northeast Indiana. The league started in 1959, as five schools broke away from the Eastern Indiana Conference and joined with Wells County Conference member Ossian. This lineup lasted only three years, as Berne would return to the EIC in 1962. The remaining five schools stuck together until 1966, as Geneva high school closed. Adams Central would be joined by Ossian in the ACAC, while Lancaster and Monmouth would play out their last season by returning to the EIC.

This is a list of former high school athletic conferences in the East and Southeast Regions of Ohio, as designated by the OHSAA. If a conference had members that span multiple regions, the conference is placed in the article of the region most of its former members hail from. Because the names of localities and their corresponding high schools do not always match and because there is often a possibility of ambiguity with respect to either the name of a locality or the name of a high school, the following table gives both in every case, with the locality name first, in plain type, and the high school name second in boldface type. The school's team nickname is given last.

The league was always closely tied with the Midwest Athletic Conference, with some schools playing in both conferences in the MAC's first incarnation, and many KVC schools either helped form the MAC's lineup in its reformation, or ended up moving to the league after the collapse of the KVC.
