This article is missing information about in a few places, and the table needs films, studios, and cinematographer pages linked.(August 2016) |
The table lists some of the movies produced in Technicolor Process 4 between 1932 and 1955. Most were filmed using three-strip Technicolor cameras though a few had sequences, or even their entirely, filmed using other techniques. These included:
Successive Frame (SF) Camera (or Successive Exposure Camera)
The first full-color animations were photographed using three-strip cameras. From 1934, animations were filmed using modified black and white cameras taking successive exposures through three color filters on a single panchromatic film, being simpler to operate and far less expensive. The technique lasted until 1973 (Robin Hood, Disney).
Kodachrome and Technicolor Monopack
These were the same positive cine stock marketed as 'Kodachrome Commercial' in 16mm and, by an agreement between Eastman Kodak and Technicolor, as ‘Technicolor Monopack’ in 35mm. When all in lowercase, 'monopack' is a generic term. When using a leading capital letter, 'Monopack' is a trade-mark of Technicolor.
Technichrome
Technichrome was a bipack system developed by Technicolor Ltd in England to photograph the 1948 Olympic Games because there were only four three-strip cameras in the UK at that time. Technichrome used 20 modified black and white cameras, Newall BNCs, built by Newall Engineering based on the Mitchell Camera which the Mitchell Camera Company had failed to patent in the UK.
All films listed were release printed from three (including those in bipack Technichrome) color matrices in Technicolor's dye-transfer process in either Hollywood or England. Matrices were exchanged between the plants for release prints in their respective markets. Technicolor plants were opened in France and Italy in 1955, the French laboratory closing in 1958.
Technicolor Process 5 described movies filmed using Eastmancolor monopack negative film, with negative processing and dye-transfer printing by Technicolor; these films were usually credited Color by Technicolor. Technicolor also dye-transfer printed Eastmancolor and Ansco negative movies where the negative had been processed by another laboratory with the credit Print by Technicolor. Technicolor publicity dated 1954 added the facility to produce dye transfer release prints from Agfacolor, Gevacolor and Ferraniacolor color negative stock, popular in Europe. No movies originating on color negative film are intentionally listed here.
The first movie using Process 4 and the three-strip camera was the 1932 animated short Flowers and Trees , whereas the first live-action feature was Becky Sharp , released in 1935. [1]
Cinematographers listed in italics are associate photographers, usually employed by Technicolor. Cinematographers in bold are Academy Award Winners for that year.

Film stock is an analog medium that is used for recording motion pictures or animation. It is recorded on by a movie camera, developed, edited, and projected onto a screen using a movie projector. It is a strip or sheet of transparent plastic film base coated on one side with a gelatin emulsion containing microscopically small light-sensitive silver halide crystals. The sizes and other characteristics of the crystals determine the sensitivity, contrast and resolution of the film. The emulsion will gradually darken if left exposed to light, but the process is too slow and incomplete to be of any practical use. Instead, a very short exposure to the image formed by a camera lens is used to produce only a very slight chemical change, proportional to the amount of light absorbed by each crystal. This creates an invisible latent image in the emulsion, which can be chemically developed into a visible photograph. In addition to visible light, all films are sensitive to X-rays and high-energy particles. Most are at least slightly sensitive to invisible ultraviolet (UV) light. Some special-purpose films are sensitive into the infrared (IR) region of the spectrum.
35 mm film is a film gauge used in filmmaking, and the film standard. In motion pictures that record on film, 35 mm is the most commonly used gauge. The name of the gauge is not a direct measurement, and refers to the nominal width of the 35 mm format photographic film, which consists of strips 1.377 ± 0.001 inches (34.976 ± 0.025 mm) wide. The standard image exposure length on 35 mm for movies is four perforations per frame along both edges, which results in 16 frames per foot of film.
16 mm film is a historically popular and economical gauge of film. 16 mm refers to the width of the film ; other common film gauges include 8 mm and 35 mm. It is generally used for non-theatrical film-making, or for low-budget motion pictures. It also existed as a popular amateur or home movie-making format for several decades, alongside 8 mm film and later Super 8 film. Eastman Kodak released the first 16 mm "outfit" in 1923, consisting of a camera, projector, tripod, screen and splicer, for US$335. RCA-Victor introduced a 16 mm sound movie projector in 1932, and developed an optical sound-on-film 16 mm camera, released in 1935.
Kodachrome is the brand name for a color reversal film introduced by Eastman Kodak in 1935. It was one of the first successful color materials and was used for both cinematography and still photography. For many years, Kodachrome was widely used for professional color photography, especially for images intended for publication in print media.
Bleach bypass, also known as skip bleach or silver retention, is a chemical effect which entails either the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching function during the processing of a color film. By doing this, the silver is retained in the emulsion along with the color dyes. The result is a black-and-white image over a color image. The images usually have reduced saturation and exposure latitude, along with increased contrast and graininess. It usually is used to maximum effect in conjunction with a one-stop underexposure.
Agfacolor was the name of a series of color film products made by Agfa of Germany. The first Agfacolor, introduced in 1932, was a film-based version of their Agfa-Farbenplatte, a "screen plate" product similar to the French Autochrome. In late 1936, Agfa introduced Agfacolor Neu, a pioneering color film of the general type still in use today. The new Agfacolor was originally a reversal film used for making "slides", home movies and short documentaries. By 1939, it had also been adapted into a negative film and a print film for use by the German motion picture industry. After World War II, the Agfacolor brand was applied to several varieties of color negative film for still photography, in which the negatives were used to make color prints on paper. The reversal film was then marketed as Agfachrome. These films use Color Developing Agent 1 in their color developer.
Cinecolor was an early subtractive color-model two-color motion picture process that was based upon the Prizma system of the 1910s and 1920s and the Multicolor system of the late 1920s and the 1930s. It was developed by William T. Crispinel and Alan M. Gundelfinger, and its various formats were in use from 1932 to 1955.
Leopold Godowsky Jr., the oldest son of the famous pianist and composer Leopold Godowsky, was an American violinist and chemist, who together with Leopold Mannes created the first practical color transparency film, Kodachrome.
In cinematography, bipacking, or a bipack, is the process of loading two reels of film into a camera, so that they both pass through the camera gate together. It was used both for in-camera effects and as an early subtractive colour process.
Color motion picture film refers both to unexposed color photographic film in a format suitable for use in a motion picture camera, and to finished motion picture film, ready for use in a projector, which bears images in color.
Eastmancolor is a trade name used by Eastman Kodak for a number of related film and processing technologies associated with color motion picture production and referring to George Eastman, founder of Kodak.
Trucolor was a color motion picture process used and owned by the Consolidated Film Industries division of Republic Pictures. It was introduced as a replacement for Consolidated's own Magnacolor process.
Leopold Damrosch Mannes was an American musician, who, together with Leopold Godowsky Jr., created the first practical color transparency film, Kodachrome.
Separation masters are a method of long-term preservation for most modern color motion picture film. Since monopack color film - used in such processes as ECN, ECP and their successive revisions - contains photographically active color couplers which remain in the film after development, the emulsion will continue to produce chemical reactions in the image which cumulatively create a color fading, usually heavily biased towards the pink spectrum. In order to protect against this occurrence, the technique of separation masters was created.
Dye transfer is a continuous-tone color photographic printing process. It was used to print Technicolor films, as well as to produce paper colour prints used in advertising, or large transparencies for display.
In bipack color photography for motion pictures, two strips of black-and-white 35 mm film, running through the camera emulsion to emulsion, are used to record two regions of the color spectrum, for the purpose of ultimately printing the images, in complementary colors, superimposed on one strip of film. The result is a multicolored projection print that reproduces a useful but limited range of color by the subtractive color method. Bipack processes became commercially practical in the early 1910s when Kodak introduced duplitized film print stock, which facilitated making two-color prints.
DeLuxe Color or Deluxe color or Color by DeLuxe is Deluxe Laboratories' brand of color process for motion pictures. DeLuxe Color is Eastmancolor-based, with certain adaptations for improved compositing for printing and for mass-production of prints. Eastmancolor, first introduced in 1950, was one of the first widely-successful "single strip color" processes, and eventually displaced three-strip Technicolor.
Technicolor is a series of color motion picture processes, the first version dating back to 1916, and followed by improved versions over several decades.
XIVth Olympiad: The Glory of Sport was the official film of the 1948 Olympic Games held at St. Moritz and London. It was premiered on 2 September 1948. The film is notable as being the first official Olympic Games to be filmed in colour.
The South Indian film industry produced colour films since the 40s, especially the Kollywood. The earliest colour films in India were also produced in South India.
