Severance is a home rule municipality [5] in Weld County, Colorado, United States. Its population was 7,683 at the 2020 census. [9] , an increase of 142.75% from 2010, with a now estimated population of 10,820. The town is located on the Colorado Eastern Plains, northwest of Greeley. A post office in Severance has been in operation since 1894. [11]
The community was named after David Severance, a pioneer settler in the area. The town originally applied for its post office to be named Tailholt, but the name was mistakenly changed to Severance when Mr. Severance applied for the post office. [3]
The Great Western Bike and Pedestrian Trail runs through the center of the town in a northeast-southwest manner. The path runs along the former route of the Great Western Railway, extending southwest to Windsor and northeast, after bending due east, to Eaton. [12]

Benjamin Harrison Eaton was an American politician, entrepreneur and agriculturalist in the late 19th and early 20th century. Eaton was a founding officer of the Greeley Colony and was instrumental in the establishment of modern irrigation farming to Northern Colorado. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the fourth Governor of Colorado, from January 1885 to January 1887, with the nickname of the "farmer governor". He was one of the largest land owners in Weld and Larimer counties, at one time owning over ninety 160 acre (0.6 km²) parcels, all watered from canals and reservoirs of his own construction. His projects were influential in helping turn the South Platte River valley into an important agricultural region in the state's economy. The town of Eaton, Colorado in western Weld County is named for him.
