The Nobel Prize in Literature (Swedish : Nobelpriset i litteratur) is awarded annually by the Swedish Academy to authors who, according to the Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, the benefactor of the prize, have produced "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction". [1] It is one of the five Nobel Prizes that are awarded for outstanding contributions in chemistry, physics, literature, peace, and physiology or medicine. [2]

Contents

Nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature are officially confidential for a period of 50 years, in accordance with the statutes of the Nobel Foundation. [3] As a result, the Swedish Academy does not release official nomination data for recent decades. [3] The individuals included in this list are therefore limited to those whose nominations have been publicly disclosed by nominators themselves, reported by reliable secondary sources, or revealed through other verifiable public statements. The absence of an writer from this list does not indicate that they were not nominated. It reflects only publicly available information and may be subject to change as additional sources emerge or as archival material is released in future decades.

Due to its size, this list has been split into two parts:

Nominees by their first nomination

The list is ordered by the year in which individuals received their first reported nomination. Some writers who were first nominated between 1900–1999 and were renominated after 1999 are listed in the former part only.
