The 2026 South Carolina gubernatorial election is scheduled to take place on November 3, 2026, to elect the governor of South Carolina. Incumbent Governor Henry McMaster is term-limited and cannot seek a third full consecutive term. He took office on January 24, 2017 upon the resignation of fellow Republican Nikki Haley to become U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration and won full terms in 2018 and 2022.

In the 2022 general election for South Carolina House of Representatives District 117, he defeated Democratic incumbent Krystle Matthews, who had been a member of the South Carolina House since 2018. Matthews was running simultaneously for the US Senate seat held by Republican incumbent Tim Scott, who ultimately defeated her in that race.

On June 10, 2023, the North Carolina Republican Party had censured Tillis over his bipartisan support on gun control and same-sex marriage. Outgoing governor Roy Cooper, who would be term-limited as governor in 2024, is considered a potential Democratic candidate.
