The Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a union territory of India. Port Blair is the capital and largest city of the territory, located about 1,190 km (740 mi) from Chennai and 1,255 km (780 mi) from Kolkata in mainland India. The islands are sandwiched between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east with the northern-most point located 901 km (560 mi) from the mouth of Hooghly river. Indira Point at 6°45’10″N and 93°49’36″E at the southern tip of Great Nicobar is the southernmost point of India.

Manoranjan Bhakta was an Indian politician and a leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) political party. He was first elected as Member of Parliament for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 1977 to the 6th Lok Sabha. In total, he served eight terms as Member of Parliament for this constituency, seven of which were consecutive from 1977–1999. In 2010, after being denied a ticket in an election, he left the INC and later joined the Trinamool Congress.

Mahatma Gandhi Government College, Mayabunder is the only college in Mayabunder, Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. It was set up in 1990 at Car Nicobar as Government College which was shifted to Mayabunder in 1994 and renamed as Mahatma Gandhi Government College on 5 December 1994. It offers undergraduate courses in six discipline. It now has total strength of 760 with 44 teaching staff, 30 non-teaching staff and more than 50 supporting staff. It is affiliated to Pondicherry University.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, established in 1984, is the oldest engineering college in Port Blair, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. It offers degree and diploma courses in engineering and maritime programmes. The institute also offers various non-formal courses in the campus as well as through its extension centre spread over different islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. All the courses which are being offered for more than four years have been accredited by NBA.

Naresh Chander Lal is an Indian film director and producer. He was awarded Padma Shri for his contribution in films and theater in 2016. He is the second person to receive the Padma Shri award from Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, South Andaman is a boarding, co-educational school in South Andaman district of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a U.T. in India. JNV South Andaman is funded by the Indian Ministry of Human Resources Development and administered by Navodaya Vidyalaya Smiti, an autonomous body under the ministry. Navodaya Vidyalayas offer free education to talented children, from Class VI to XII.

Andaman Law College (ALC) is a government law school in Port Blair, India. It was established in 2016 by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Legal Education Society (ANILES) under Andaman & Nicobar Administration, and is entirely government-funded. It is run by the ANILES with Hon'ble Lt. Governor as its president, Hon'ble Chief Secretary as its Chairman and the Law Secretary as its Vice Chairman. The institute has a moderately sized interim campus in Transport Bhawan, Phoenix Bay, Port Blair.

The 2019 Indian general election in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, held for the one seat in the Islands. Congress candidate Kuldeep Rai Sharma won the election from the only seat. Sharma defeated BJP candidate Vishal Jolly.

The first case of the COVID-19 pandemic in India was reported on 30 January 2020, originating from China. Slowly, the pandemic spread to various states and union territories including the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The first case was recorded in this region on 26 March 2020. The islands have pursued a strategy of zero COVID-19 transmission, which, except for three flareups in August 2020, May 2021, and January 2022, which were swiftly contained, have resulted in no community outbreaks. The islands have successfully managed the outbreaks, and the union territory has the lowest case count of any region of India, both in total cases and infection rate.
