Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) is a special economic zone in Chennai, India. It is one of the seven export processing zones in the country set up by the central government. [1] It was established in 1984 to promote foreign direct investment, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and create greater employment opportunities in the region. [2]
The MEPZ is located on GST Road in Tambaram, Chennai. It is located 6 km south of Chennai International Airport.
The MEPZ was started in 1984 as an initiative of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry with an investment of ₹ 6716.7 million. [3] On 1 January 2003, the zone was converted into a special economic zone (SEZ) [2] with an added objective of facilitating exports through reduction of transaction costs. [4] To facilitate this, the Ministry of Commerce and Industries introduced special features such as offshore banking units and container freight stations to be set up within the zone, in addition to liberalised customs procedures. [4]
In March 2013, an additional exit and entry point for heavy vehicles arriving at and leaving the MEPZ–SEZ was opened. [5]
The zone is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Commerce and Industries and caters to the needs of units within the SEZ, in addition to monitoring the functions of 100-percent export-oriented units (EOUs) located in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. [3] The zone is headed by a development commissioner.
Spread over an area of 265 acres (109 hectares), [3] MEPZ SEZ is a multi-product zone housing 117 functional units. [4] In addition, another 27 units are under various stages of implementation. [4] The zone employs over 26,000 people. [3] In the manufacturing front, there are 110 SME units in the zone. MEPZ's manufacturing sector employs nearly 20,000 people. [3] IT companies housed in the zone include Cognizant Technology Solutions, Computer Sciences Corporation, CSS and HTC Global Services among others. [2] About 50 container trucks arrive at and leave the zone every day. [5]
The zone has an exclusive 230 KV sub-station, capable of supplying 30 MW. It also has an exclusive telephone exchange with fibre optic connectivity, a post office, video conferencing facility in the administrative building, and a telecommunication tower. The foreign exchange transactions of the zone are facilitated by a branch of Indian Bank located within in the SEZ. [6]
The export turnover for the year 2006-2007 was ₹ 24,620 million, of which manufacturing sector accounted for 70 percent. [3] Garments, software, and engineering products contributed more than 50 percent of the export value. In recent years, engineering sector has been promoted with special reference to automobile ancillaries. [4]
As of 2008, software exports from the zone averaged ₹ 300 to 350 million per month. [3]
Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) is a governmental agency in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is responsible for the development of industries in the state by formulating policies that help industry growth, and by establishing industrial estates. It often partners with TANSIDCO. TIDCO has established the Tidel Park in Chennai and Tidel Park in Coimbatore for information technology companies, and Ticel Park in southern Chennai for chemical companies.

Kamarajar Port Limited, formerly Ennore Port, is located on the Coromandel Coast, Chennai about 18 km north of Chennai Port. It is the 12th major port of India, and the first port in India which is a public company. The Kamarajar Port Limited is the only corporatised major port and is registered as a company. Chennai Port Trust acquired around 67% stake of Centre in the Kamarajar Port Limited on 27 March 2020. The remaining 23 percent was already held by the Chennai Port Trust.

Over the last decade South India has grown at 8% annually. Future economic growth will be shackled by a relatively low proportion of the active age population to the number of dependents.

Recent estimates of the economy of the Chennai Metropolitan Area is around US$78.6-86 billion, $200 billion with industrial zones; PPP GDP, ranking it from fifth most productive metro area of India, and the third highest by GDP per capita. The metropolitan area doesn't include the nearby industrial zones of Siruseri and Sriperumbudur, due to which these regions' economy doesn't get included in the total economy of Chennai. If these regions are included, the economy of Chennai would be somewhere over $200 billion.

Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) is a Special Economic Zone in Mumbai, India. Situated in the Andheri East area, it is subjected to liberal economic laws as compared to the rest of India to promote rapid economic growth using tax and business incentives and attract foreign investment and technology. Seepz was created in 1973 and was seen as export processing zone. Since then many other SEZ's have been created in rest of India. SEEPZ mainly houses electronic hardware manufacturing companies, software companies, and jewelry exporters of India. More than 40 percent of India's total jewelry exports out of $5,210.69 million during year 2006-2007 came from units within SEEPZ.

The SEZ Corridor is an emerging corridor implementing a number of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) along the Grand Southern Trunk Road in Chennai. Started with the establishment of the Madras Export Processing Zone in 1984, the SEZ corridor currently has 5 operational SEZs and over 10 approved projects in development. The GST Road is widely made use of for SEZ projects due to its connectivity with various means of transport by road, rail and air. This is evident by the presence of the Chennai International Airport, various railway stations parallel to the road, and also its connectivity to the complex road network of the National Highways Authority of India.
Economy of Coimbatore is heavily influenced by information technology, engineering and textiles. Coimbatore is called the Manchester of South India due to its extensive textile industry, and IT industry, small and medium scale enterprise gdp(gross domestic product) of Coimbatore city is around $45 billion in 2021.It is second largest city by GDP in Tamil Nadu. The city has four special economic zones [SEZ], ELCOT SEZ, KGISL SEZ, SPAN Venture SEZ, Aspen SEZ and at least five more SEZs are in the pipeline. In 2010, Coimbatore ranked 15th in the list of most competitive Indian cities.
Chennai is the third largest software exporter in India, next only to Bangalore & Hyderabad. India's largest IT park is housed at Chennai. Software exports from Tamil Nadu during 2017–2018 rose 8.6% per cent to touch 1,11,179 crore, involving a workforce of 780,000, and the city is the hub for deep tech startup companies. Many software and software services companies have development centres in Chennai, which contributed 14 percent of India's total software exports of ₹ 14,42,140 lakh during 2006–07, making it the third largest Indian city software exporter following [[Bangalore], [Hyderabad]] and the city is the home for 7 top rated IT companies out of 15 in India. The Tidel Park in Chennai was billed as Asia's largest IT park when it was built. Major software companies have their offices set up here, with some of them making Chennai their largest base. Chennai is the largest hub for e-publishing, as there are 67 e-publishing units registered with the STPI and many Rs.8300-Cr data centers, digital hubs are in the process of development. A major reason for the growth of the Software industry are the top engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, of which Chennai is a major contributor, have been a major recruiting hub for the IT firms. According to estimates, these engineering colleges and universities consistently generate about 50 per cent of the human resource requirements for the IT and ITES industry was being sourced from the state, particularly from Chennai.
DLF Cybercity is an multiblock Information technology (IT) SEZ, developed by DLF a commercial real estate developer. DLF Cybercity is located on the 100 ft. road, Nandambakkam in Ramapuram, Chennai. It is built on a 43-acre integrated campus with internal roads, extensive landscaping, a dedicated fire station, 4.5 acres of green zone and a 2-acre sports zone.
Tambaram City Municipal Corporation is the civic body administering Tambaram and the surrounding suburbs of Chennai, located in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu, India. It covers an area of 87.64 sq. km and has an estimated 2021 population of 960,887.
