Gotham Bar and Grill is a New American restaurant located at 12 East 12th Street (between Fifth Avenue and University Place), in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, in New York City. [3] It opened in 1984. [4] It closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and re-opened in November 2021. [5] [6]
The restaurant was opened by Jerry Kretchmer, Jeff Bliss, Rick and Robert Rathe and featured the American chef Alfred Portale. Portale was influenced by the New American cuisine movement from California in the 1980s and 1990s, notably from Alice Waters and Jeremiah Tower of Chez Panisse. In 2019 Portale left Gotham to found his eponymous restaurant on 18th Street. Victoria Blamey took over the kitchen, and the restaurant was awarded 3 Stars for her inventive cuisine. Chef Ron Paprocki reopened Gotham as Executive Chef in November 2021 with a renovated dining room and a new menu. Paprocki was formerly the restaurants Pastry Chef. [1] [7] Paprocki is now the restaurant's third chef after the arrival of Chef Portale in 1985. [8]
After Gotham's closing in March 2020, TimeOut wrote about the restaurant that "it consistently garnered rave reviews, but it was a perhaps a confluence of factors—the trend toward more casual dining, a shift in ownership and the current crisis—that led to the restaurant’s demise." [6]
In June 2024, Gotham temporarily closed its doors again after being victimized in a $45,000 cyberscam, with plans to possibly reopen by the end of summer 2024. [9] In July 2024, Gotham filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. [10]
The menu consists of seasonal-inspired selections such as Elyssian Fields-roasted loin of lamb, Niman Ranch 40 Day Dry Aged Strip Steak, Roasted Celeriac with Vegan Bordelaise and Black Truffles, and Handmade Cavatelli. The modern American menu changes seasonally. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]
The modern, expansive restaurant was chic, located in the multi-level loft space of a former warehouse, with high soaring ceilings, tall floor-to-ceiling windows, and pieces of parachute cloth billowing around its chandeliers. [7] [8] [16] [14] [15] [17] The restaurant's art collection had its own curator. [17] The restaurant served over 400 diners daily as of 2009. [18]
In 1993, restaurant critic Gael Greene wrote that it was her favorite restaurant. [19] Bryan Miller of The New York Times gave it three stars in 1985, Molly O’Neill of the Times gave it three stars in 1993, Ruth Reichl of the Times gave it three stars in 1996, and Sam Sifton of the Times awarded it three stars in 2011. In 2013, Zagats gave it a food rating of 28, the second-highest food rating in Greenwich Village. [3]

Le Bernardin is a three-Michelin star French seafood restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Eric Ripert is the executive chef, and he is co-owner along with Maguy Le Coze.
Tom Valenti is the Executive Chef at Jockey Hollow Bar and Kitchen in Morristown NJ. Chef Valenti was formerly the owner and Executive Chef of Oxbow Tavern on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He is the former Executive Chef of Le Cirque Restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, in New York City. Previously, he was Executive Chef and co-owner of Ouest Restaurant on the Upper West Side of Manhattan which shuttered in 2015. The recipient of many awards for his comfortable cooking style, Valenti is best known for his salmon gravlax and slow-cooked meats, particularly braised lamb shanks. Chef Valenti is the author of 3 cookbooks, "Welcome to my Kitchen", "Soups, Stews and One Pot Meals" as well as "You Don't Have to be Diabetic to Love This Cookbook", dedicated to recipes for diabetic diets. Valenti was the driving force behind the creation of the Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund, established to benefit the surviving family members of foodservice-related victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Tribeca Grill is a New American restaurant located at 375 Greenwich Street in Tribeca, Manhattan, in New York City, co-owned by Robert De Niro and Drew Nieporent. Celebrity investors include Bill Murray, Sean Penn, Christopher Walken, Ed Harris, and Lou Diamond Phillips, among others. It opened in 1990. The Executive Chef is Stephane Motir. The large mahogany bar in the center of the restaurant is from the former Maxwell's Plum restaurant.
Joe's Shanghai is a chain of seven Shanghainese restaurants in the United States and Japan. The original location was opened by restaurateur Mei Ping "Barbara" Matsumura and chef Kiu Sang "Joe" Si in 1995 in Flushing, Queens, followed by branches in Manhattan Chinatown and Midtown Manhattan. There are four locations in Japan, two in Tokyo, one in Osaka and one in Sendai. Ms. Matsumura has opened over a dozen restaurants in the New York City area, including the popular Haru sushi chain, while Chef Si also opened Joe's Ginger one block from the Manhattan Chinatown location of Joe's Shanghai, building on the original concept but incorporating the influence of other Chinese cuisines, most notably from Hong Kong.
