The Greater Accra Region has the smallest area of Ghana's 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 3,245 square kilometres. This is 1.4 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. It is the second most populated region, before the Ashanti Region, with a population of 5,455,692 in 2021, accounting for 17.7 per cent of Ghana's total population.

Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988, which was created from the former Dangme District Council. However on 28 June 2012, it was split off into two new districts: Ada East District and Ada West District. The lower Volta Bridge is also the site for the famous Tortsogbeza, an annual festival held during Easter, which involves diving off the bridge, and is held in conjunction with the neighbouring town, Sokpoe. It is home to the Holy Trinity Spa, Cisneros Villa Hotel and other notable resorts including Shekinah Glory Hotel, Sogakofe Beach Resort etc. Most commuters plying the Accra to Aflao road usually stop over to buy snacks and bread. The town is mostly known for bread baking as well.

Ada Foah is a town on the southeast coast of Ghana, where the Volta River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The town is located along the Volta River, off of the Accra-Aflao motorway. Known for palm-lined beaches and estuary islands, Ada Foah is also the capital of the Ada East District and the seat of the District Assembly.

It was later elevated to municipal district assembly status on 29 February 2008 to become Ga East Municipal District, until the eastern part of the district was split off to create La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal District on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been retained as Ga East Municipal District. The municipality is located in the western part of Greater Accra Region and has Abokobi as its capital town.
Taifa is a town in the Ga East Municipal District, a district in the Greater Accra Region of south-eastern Ghana near the capital Accra. Taifa is the twenty-sixth largest settlement in Ghana, in terms of population, with a population of 68,459 people. Taifa is located in the northwest suburbs area of Accra. It has a breakpoint on a railway line and a small park located on the northern edge of the location of the Taifa Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. At the Ghana 2000 census of 26 March 2000, the population was 26,145 inhabitants living in the city. Projections of 1 January 2007 estimated the population to be 48,927 inhabitants. In the census of 1984 there was only 1,009 inhabitants. The strong population growth of the Town is influenced by, among other things, many illegal immigrants from west African countries who move to towns and villages near the industrial town of Tema to find a job.
Abokobi is a small town and is the capital of Ga East Municipal District, an MMDA located within the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.
Adenta East is a town in Adenta District in the Greater Accra Region of southeastern Ghana, and north of Madina. Adenta East is the thirty-ninth most populous settlement in Ghana, in terms of population, with a population of 44,194 people. At the Ghana census of 26 March 2000, the population was 31,070 inhabitants living in the town. Projections of 1 January 2007 estimated a population of 39,730 inhabitants.
The N1 or National Highway 1 is a national highway in Ghana that begins at the border with Ivory Coast at Elubo and runs through Sekondi-Takoradi, Cape Coast, Winneba, Accra and Tema to the border with Togo at Aflao. It is the main highway along the coast of the country, with a total distance of 540 kilometers. The route runs through the Western, Central, Greater Accra and Volta regions of Ghana.
