Abbotsford is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. This suburb lies north-east of the Johannesburg CBD next to Oaklands, Highlands North and Melrose. It is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

History

It was established in 1902 and the suburb is named after Sir Walter Scott's house called Abbotsford a historic country house in the Scottish Borders, near Melrose, on the south bank of the River Tweed. [2]

In the early 2000s prominent public figures Hazel Crane and Brett Kebble were murdered in the suburb. [3]

The area referred to as Fourways is the fastest-developing commercial and residential hub in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, South Africa. The main access routes to Fourways are off the N1 at R511 William Nicol Drive, or alternatively along R564 Witkoppen Road. It is located mostly in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Troyeville is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Roger Brett Kebble was a South African mining magnate with close links to factions in the ruling political party, the African National Congress. Known to be personally eccentric, he became a major player in South African gold and diamond mining from the mid-1990s, especially through black economic empowerment deals, but was embroiled in allegations of corporate fraud and misconduct, the extent of which was revealed only after his death. He was shot dead on 27 September 2005 in Johannesburg. The investigation into his death, involving several prominent businessmen and politicians, received significant public attention. His name was also prominent in media coverage of Jackie Selebi's 2009 corruption trial. 2010 court testimony revealed that Kebble was killed by hit men hired by his security chief, allegedly at his own request – an apparent suicide-by-murder. However, the complete circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

JCI or Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Co. Ltd. was founded in 1889 by the British entrepreneur Barney Barnato. JCI was a major force in South African mining for over 100 years. Using his investments in the Kimberley diamond fields, particularly his 25% share in De Beers, Barnato foresaw the value of and invested in the potential of the Witwatersrand gold mines. At first he bought small but rich mines near Germiston – the New Primrose, named after his daughter, and others in the same region.

Hazel Crane was a prominent socialite, businesswoman and posthumous memoirist in South Africa. She was assassinated on 10 November 2003 near her mansion home in the plush northern Johannesburg suburb of Abbotsford  – the same suburb in which controversial mining magnate Brett Kebble was murdered in 2005. Crane was killed as she left home to testify against an alleged organized crime boss in a murder trial.
