History
Eastgate was Johannesburg's first 'super-regional' shopping centre. [2] The decision to build Eastgate was taken in 1974 by Rapp & Maister. [2] It was to be built on an 18 ha site with 5 ha inside the Johannesburg municipality while the other 13 ha was in Bedfordview. [2] It was planned to be opened in 1978 and would have 90,000sqm of retail space with major tenants being OK Bazaars, Edgars, Woolworths, Greatermans and John Orrs. [2] There would be another 180 smaller stores, four cinemas and 5,000 parking bays. [2] When it opened in 1979, it was the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere.
Further upgrades
A R 300,000,000 expansion was completed in 2010, which brings Eastgate to over 121,000 m2 (1,300,000 sq ft). A few years later, the centre underwent another major redevelopment by Liberty Life to modernise both the retail and office components, which was completed in 2017. To this day, it is managed by Liberty Properties on behalf of the parent company, Liberty Holdings Limited. [3] [4] The centre is currently over 145,000 m2 (1,560,000 sq ft). [4]
Eastgate Shopping Centre is frequented by over 80,000 shoppers on Saturdays and over 2 million shoppers during an average month. The shopping centre offers Bureau de change facilities. Major retailers include one of the most successful Woolworths in South Africa and a recently refurbished cinema complex. [5] The centre has over 250 stores, which include more than 60 fashion boutiques and 13 jewellers.
Unusual for a single complex, the building straddled the municipal boundaries of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. However, in 2013, the boundary was adjusted by the Municipal Demarcation Board to move Eastgate fully into Ekurhuleni.

Chadstone Shopping Centre is a super regional shopping centre located in the south-eastern Melbourne suburb of Malvern East. Chadstone Shopping Centre is the biggest shopping centre in Australia and one of the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. Rosebank is a cosmopolitan commercial and residential suburb to the north of central Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region B of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, and is the location of a Gautrain station.
Bruma is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. In the 1990s Bruma was well known for South Africa's first manmade lake-side shopping centre, and for its popular African curios and crafts market which attracted tourists and day visitors from around the country. As a popular entertainment destination Bruma boasted many activities and a plethora of restaurants and retail stores. Many of South Africa's large restaurant chain stores can find their routes at the then called Fishermans Village. Edenvale is a small city on the East Rand in Gauteng, South Africa. The greater Edenvale area has an estimated population of 70,000, including Greenstone, Harmelia, Highway Gardens, Buurendal and Croydon. Edenvale is part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. It lies about halfway between the O.R. Tambo International Airport and the Johannesburg city centre and is located 12 km by road from Sandton and about 9 km from the closest Gautrain station.

It is situated south of Tembisa, one of the largest townships in South Africa, which is also part of Ekurhuleni. South Africa's busiest airport, O. R. Tambo International Airport is located in Kempton Park.
Bedfordview is an affluent suburb in western Ekurhuleni, sharing an administrative boundary with the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng, South Africa. Bedfordview has been part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since 2000. The Eastgate Shopping Centre, one of the biggest in Africa when first built, is also located here.
The R21 / P157 is a major north–south provincial route in eastern Gauteng Province, South Africa. Built in the early 1970s, it remains one of two freeways linking Pretoria with Johannesburg, via the R24. As the eastern of the two freeways, it links the Pretoria city centre with OR Tambo International Airport, the N12 freeway, and Boksburg. Between the Solomon Mahlangu Drive on-ramp in Monument Park, Pretoria, and the N12 in Boksburg, the R21 / P157 is an 8 lane highway and motorway (freeway), with 4 lanes in each direction. It has off-ramps leading to Irene, Olifantsfontein, Benoni, and Kempton Park, including a partial offramp to Atlas Road. The route intersects the N1 Highway near Centurion, the R24 near the airport, the N12 and N17 in Boksburg, and the N3 near Vosloorus on the East Rand, where it ends. The section from the N12 to the N3 is not a freeway. As early as the 1970s there were proposals to extend the R21 / P157 freeway further south and the freeway may be linked with the current eastern terminus of the M2 in Germiston in future.
The R24 is a major East-West provincial route in the Gauteng and North West provinces that links OR Tambo International Airport with Rustenburg via Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg. The process of renaming the streets and freeway that form the route from Krugersdorp eastward to OR Tambo International after anti-apartheid stalwart Albertina Sisulu was completed in 2013.

The municipality itself is a large suburban region east of Johannesburg. The name Ekurhuleni means place of peace in XiTsonga. Ekurhuleni is one of the five districts of Gauteng province and one of the eight metropolitan municipalities of South Africa. The seat of Ekurhuleni is Germiston. The city is home to South Africa's busiest airport, OR Tambo International Airport, which is located in the Kempton Park area of Ekurhuleni.
Westfield Booragoon is a major regional shopping centre in the city of Perth, Western Australia. Greenstone Hill is a suburb on the East Rand of Gauteng Province in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa. It has only recently been developed although much of the surrounding areas such as Edenvale and Modderfontein have been developed and established for quite some time.
Mall of Africa is a shopping mall located in Waterfall City, Midrand, Gauteng. It is the third largest single-phase shopping mall to be built in Africa, but smaller than Gateway, Sandton City, Menlyn Park and Fourways Mall. The total retail area is 130 000 square metres. The shopping mall has two main levels of shopping as well as an outdoor restaurant plaza which connects directly to the Waterfall City Park.
