Morningside is a commercial and residential suburb of Johannesburg in Sandton, South Africa, located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. As a part of the former Sandton municipality, it constitutes many affluent residential areas as well as small and medium business enterprises, clinics, schools, hotels and shopping centres.

History

The suburb is situated on part of an old Witwatersrand farm called Zandfontein. [2] It was established on 8 March 1950. [2] The suburb may be named for a suburb of the same name in southern Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. It has been home to Bet David (previously Temple David), a Progressive Jewish congregation since the 1970s. [3]

The multi-lane N1 freeway forms its northern boundary with access at the R511/M81 off-ramp. It is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

Sunninghill is a commercial and residential suburb of Sandton in Gauteng, South Africa. It is located in Region A of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The N1 freeway, which at this area is eight lanes across, forms its southern boundary with access at Rivonia offramp. The K60 road runs through the centre of Sunninghill to assist in easing traffic. Sunninghill is bordered by the suburbs of Paulshof, Kyalami and Woodmead.

The Gautrain rapid rail system's Sandton Station is located in Sandown, linking Sandton to O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg Central and the Capital City, Pretoria.

It is the oldest synagogue in use in South Africa. The synagogue is located two blocks from Ellis Park Stadium.

The Temple Israel is a Progressive Jewish congregation and synagogue, located in Hillbrow, a suburb of Johannesburg, in the district of Gauteng, South Africa. Designed by Hermann Kallenbach in the Art Deco style, the synagogue was completed in 1936 and is the oldest of eleven Progressive synagogues in South Africa. The synagogue is classified as a provincial heritage site. The congregation is affiliated with the South African Union for Progressive Judaism (SAUPJ), which is part of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ).

Bet David Progressive Jewish Congregation, is a Progressive Jewish congregation and synagogue. It is located in Morningside in the Sandton area of Johannesburg. The congregation has had three synagogues during its lifetime, beginning in 1971. A larger synagogue was then built and consecrated in 1977. More recently, it's present and third synagogue was consecrated in 2017. It is an affiliate of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism (SAUPJ), which is part of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ).
