Avadi City Municipal Corporation is the civic body governing Avadi, a suburb of Chennai, in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is headed by a executive mayor and governed by a commissioner. It is one of the four municipal corporations within the Chennai Metropolitan Area, the other three being the central Greater Chennai Corporation,the satellite Tambaram City Municipal Corporation and the Kancheepuram City Municipal Corporation

History and administration

Municipal Corporation mechanism in India was introduced during British Rule with formation of municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688, later followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) by 1762. [4]

Avadi Municipal Corporation in Tiruvallur district was formed in year 2019 [5] and is 15th municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu. [6] [7] [8] Avadi Municipal Corporation has 48 wards with a population of 6.1 lakhs spread in 65 km2. [9] The place is driven industrially with location of many key industries.

Avadi Municipal Corporation a Commissioner Mayor, a Council, a Standing Committee, a Wards Committee for facilitating various works. [10]

Currently the Municipal Commissioner is K. THARPAGARAJ IAS. [11]

Areas of Avadi Municipal Corporation

The newly established Avadi Corporation will include the 48 wards of the existing Avadi Municipality and its adjoining Avadi, Thirumullaivoyal, Kovilpathagai, Mittanamalli, Pattabiram, Paruthipattu and Housing Board residential areas.[ citation needed ]

In the future, there is a possibility of merging some areas in the local bodies like Thiruverkadu, Poonamallee, Thiruninravur, Vanagaram, Nemilicherry Veppampattu and Ayathur with the Avadi Corporation after consulting the people.[ citation needed ]

Zone 1

Zone 1 comprises 12 wards. Wards numbered 1 to 5, 11, 12, 15 - 19 are included in this zone.

Zone 2

Zone 2 comprises 12 wards. Wards numbered 6 to 10, 25 - 30, 32 are included in this zone.

Zone 3

Zone 3 comprises 12 wards. Wards numbered 31, 33 to 35, 40 to 44, 46 to 48 are included in this zone.

Zone 4

Zone 4 comprises 12 wards. Wards numbered 13, 14, 20 to 24, 36 to 39, 45 are included in this zone.

Avadi is a suburb located west of Chennai within Chennai Metropolitan Area in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, India. Situated at about 22 kilometres (14 mi) from Chennai Central Railway Station, it is one of the four municipal corporations in Chennai Metropolitan Area and is governed by the Avadi Municipal Corporation. Pallavaram Corporation was a corporation planned by the government of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In 2011, Chennai Corporation extended its city limits. In 2017, Pallavaram, Avadi and Tambaram was announced for the upgrade into corporations. But later in year 2019, Avadi is upgraded as municipal corporation, while Pallavaram remained as a municipality, and a part of the newly created Chengalpattu district. The proposed Chennai Pallavaram Corporation would have been a satellite corporation adjacent to the Greater Chennai Corporation.

Kancheepuram City Municipal Corporation is the civic body that governs the city of Kancheepuram in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Inaugurated on 21 October 2021 covering an area of 36.14 Sqkm and an estimated population of more than 3,00,000 in 2021. It is headed by Mayor who presides over 51 councillors, each of whom represents one of the 51 wards of the city and executive is governed by Municipal Commissioner. Located about 75 km from Chennai in Tamilnadu state of southern India, Kanchipuram is a temple City renowned for its majestic temple architecture and Silk sarees. Of the 108 holy temples of the Hindu god Vishnu (DivyaDesams), 14 are located in Kanchipuram. In ancient time the city was a hub for religious education and was known as the ghatikasthanam, or "place of learning".
