Shree Vasupujya Swami Jain Shwetamber temple, also known as the Gujarati Shwetambar Murtipujak Jain Mandir and Mavadi Jain Temple, [1] [2] commonly known as Mylapore Jain temple, is a Swetambara Jain temple in Chennai, India. Located in the neighborhood of Mylapore, the temple is dedicated to Lord Mahavira and other Tirthankaras.

The temple

The temple is located on Mathala Narayanan Street, off Kutchery Road, in Mylapore, near the Mylapore Tank. [3] The temple is built completely with marble and is claimed to be the first Jain temple in South India with three gopurams (towers or gateways) and five doors. [1] [4] The use of iron has been completely avoided in the construction of the temple structure. [4] The main idol inside the temple is made of quartz. [4] All the construction workers involved in the construction of the temple, including the architects, the stone carvers and the workers, were hired from Rajasthan. [4] Annual maintenance of the temple include polishing the marble walls. [3]

The main deity in the temple is Lord Parsvanatha, the 23rd tirthankara (saint) of the Jains. [4]

Incidents

During the annual maintenance work in February 2016, around 12 kg of silver jewellery and 10,000 in cash from the temple hundi was reported stolen. [2] [5]

Jain temples, Halebidu Jain temples in the state of Karnataka

Jain Basadi complex in Halebidu, Hassan district consists of three Jain Basadis dedicated to the Jain Tirthankars Parshvanatha, Shantinatha and Adinatha. The Hansi hoard was discovered accidentally by children looking for a ball, when they discovered one of the images on January 19, 1982. Hansi is located in the Hisar district of Haryana state, India. Archaeological Survey of India then excavated the completely hoard in 1982. It contained 58 bronze images of Jain Tirthankaras inside Asigarh Fort dating back to the 8th-9th century, as determined by paleographical analysis, although none of the images are dated.
