The 1886 California gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 1886, to elect the governor of California. Washington Bartlett won a narrow plurality of the votes to become the state's 16th governor. For the first time since 1863, the incumbent party retained control of the governor's mansion.

Contents

Bartlett's term as governor would prove to be the second-shortest in the state's history: he died only eight months into his term on September 17, 1887. He was succeeded by Lieutenant Governor Robert Waterman, who had been elected at the same time as Bartlett.

The 2010 California gubernatorial election was held November 2, 2010, to elect the governor of California. The primary elections were held on June 8, 2010. Because constitutional office holders in California have been prohibited from serving more than two terms in the same office since November 6, 1990, incumbent Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger was term-limited and thus was ineligible to run for re-election to a third term. Former governor Jerry Brown, to whom the term limits did not apply due to a grandfather clause, defeated Meg Whitman in the general election and was sworn into office on January 3, 2011. As of 2024, this is the last time the governor’s office in California changed partisan control.

The 1914 California gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1914. Hiram Johnson was elected in 1910 as a member of the Republican Party. Dissatisfaction with the conservatism of the William Howard Taft administration led many Republicans to join former President Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive Party, with Johnson running as the vice-presidential nominee in the 1912 presidential election. Despite losing the election, and winning California by fewer than 200 votes, Johnson was supremely popular in California. He was re-elected in 1914 as governor on the Progressive Party ticket, nearly tripling his vote from 1910 as a Republican, and was elected and reelected as U.S. senator many times until his death in 1945.

The 1910 California gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 1910. It saw Republican Hiram Johnson elected as the state's governor. Johnson won the election with 45.9% of the popular vote, and became the 23rd governor of California. This was the first gubernatorial election in which Fresno County, Modoc County, San Benito County, Stanislaus County, and Tulare County voted for a Republican candidate. These Republican flips of traditionally Democratic counties foreshadowed the future Republican dominance of California gubernatorial elections that began in the next election.

This was the fifth consecutive gubernatorial election in California in which the incumbent party was defeated.

The 1879 California gubernatorial election was held on September 3, 1879, to elect the governor of California. George Clement Perkins won a plurality of votes, marking the fourth consecutive election in which the incumbent governor's party was defeated. Earlier that year, on May 7, 1879, voters in California approved a new constitution which, effective in 1880, moved the dates of elections to even-numbered years to coincide with elections for federal offices. Thus, the next election for governor would be held on November 7, 1882. As such, Perkins' term as governor would last only three years.

Voters in the 20 even-numbered districts of the California State Senate elected their representatives. The elections coincided with the elections of other offices, including for governor and the California State Assembly.

Robert Marshall Briggs was an American merchant, lawyer, judge and politician in Wisconsin and California. Briggs served as a Whig member of the 2nd and 4th Wisconsin Legislatures representing Grant County in the Wisconsin State Assembly; and in 1857 was elected to the California State Assembly from Amador County as a Know-Nothing. He also served as a district attorney and a judge.
