Being the headquarters city, Malappuram comprises the Civil Station area which consists of administrative and other Government offices of the district such as District Collectorate, District Treasury, RTO, PWD Division Office, District Panchayat, Town planning Office, Text depot, District Medical office, etc. to name a few. The city is administered by the Malappuram Municipality, headed by a Municipal Chairman. For administrative purposes, the city is divided into 40 wards, from which the members of the municipal council are elected for five years. The Chairman of Malappuram Municipality is Sri mujeeb Kaderi (IUML) and the Deputy Chairperson is Sri. Konnola fousiya (INC). The present Malappuram District Collector is K. Gopalakrishnan. [1]

ISO Certification

Malappuram is the first municipal body in India to win an ISO 9001-2008 certification for quality management. It has been on a track of fast reforms for the past couple of years and has achieved the distinction of having zero pendency of files. [2]

Law and order

City police is headed by a DySP (Deputy Superintendent of police) of Malappuram. And Office of Superintendent of Police is also at Malappuram. Apart from regular law and order, city police comprise the Malappuram Traffic Police, Bomb Squad, Dog Squad, Women's Cell, Narcotics Cell, Malabar Special Police, Armed Police Camp, District Crime Records Bureau. Proposed Malappuram Municipal Corporation

There is a demand to upgrade Malappuram Municipality to a Municipal Corporation by incorporating the local bodies in the Greater Malappuram region. [5] The proposed Malappuram Municipal Corporation comprises:

The federal, provincial and local administration of Malappuram district has a complex structure.

Political divisions include 3 Lok Sabha constituencies for the Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian Parliament) and 16 legislative assembly constituencies for the Kerala Legislative Assembly in the district. Each represented by a Member of Parliament (MP) and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) respectively.

Administrative subdivisions

The district consists of two revenue divisions (Tirur and Perintalmanna), seven subdistricts, 135 villages, 15 blocks, twelve municipalities and 100 panchayats.

For the ease of revenue administration, there are 7 subdistricts in the district, which are again divided into 138 villages. These 7 subdistricts are combined in 2 revenue divisions namely Tirur and Perinthalmanna.

Ponnani, Tirur, Tirurangadi, and Kondotty are included in the Tirur revenue division, whereas the remaining Taluks together form Perinthalmanna revenue division.

Rural administration

For the ease of rural administration, the rural district is divided into 94 Gram Panchayats which together form 15 blocks. [8] These 15 block panchayats combine to form the Malappuram district Panchayat, which is the apex body of rural governance in the district. The 94 Gram Panchayats are again divided into 1,778 wards. [9] However, Census towns (small towns with urban features) also come under the jurisdiction of Gram Panchayats.

Urban administration

For the ease of urban administration, 12 municipalities are there in the district.

Its headquarters is the town of Perinthalmanna.The taluk encompasses 24 revenue villages. Perinthalmanna Taluk contains Perinthalmanna Municipality and 15 Gram panchayats. Most of the administrative offices are located in the Mini-Civil Station at Perinthalmanna.

Eranad also known as Ernad refers to the erstwhile province in the midland area of Malabar, consisting of Malappuram and nearby regions such as Anakkayam, Manjeri, Kondotty, Nilambur, etc. Currently Eranad Taluk is a Taluk in Malappuram district. Eranad was ruled by a Samanthan Nair clan known as Eradis, similar to the Vellodis of neighbouring Valluvanad and Nedungadis of Nedunganad. The rulers of Eranad were known by the title Eralppad/Eradi. They also used the title Thirumulpad.

Most of the villages in present-day Tirur Taluk were parts of the medieval Kingdom of Tanur (Vettathunadu). Perinthalmanna is a major town and municipality in Malappuram district, Kerala, India. It was formerly the headquarters of Valluvanad Taluk, which was one of the two Taluks in the Malappuram Revenue Division of the erstwhile Malabar District during the British Raj. Malappuram district is an education hub of the state of Kerala, India with four universities, two medical colleges, two law colleges and several engineering and arts colleges. The city has several educational institutions from the school level to higher education. Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Malabar Special Police HSS, Government Girls Higher secondary school, Govt. Boys, St.Gemmas HSS, Islahiya HSS, A.U.P School, Sree Arunodaya Vidya Nigethan etc. to name a few schools. The city is lacking an Engineering College under Government despite having the largest number of students appearing and excelling in respective entrance exams. Govt. College, Malappuram, which is the oldest college in the city, started in 1972, College of Applied Science Malappuram and Govt. College for Women started this year along with many other private colleges serves the higher educational purpose. Govt.TTI and MCT TTI are few teachers training institutes. The Regional Directorate of Higher Secondary Education and Regional Office (Malabar) of State Open School are located in the city inside the Civil Station.

Malappuram is one of the 14 districts in the South Indian state of Kerala. The district has a unique and eventful history starting from pre-historic times. During the early medieval period, the district was the home to two of the four major kingdoms that ruled Kerala. Perumpadappu was the original hometown of the Kingdom of Cochin, which is also known as Perumbadappu Swaroopam, and Nediyiruppu was the original hometown of the Zamorin of Calicut, which is also known as Nediyiruppu Swaroopam. Besides, the original headquarters of the Palakkad Rajas were also at Athavanad in the district.

The Tirurangadi Taluk Office, also known as Hajur Kacheri, is a historic building located in Tirurangadi Talk of Malappuram District in the Indian state of Kerala. It houses the Tirurangadi Taluk Office since the post-independence Malabar District or British-era Madras Presidency. The Taluk office, which was once the Hajur Kacheri (Huzur Office) under the British, was one of the major administrative centers of the British government in Malabar region. The building also functioned as the headquarters of a short-lived Khilafat government during the rebellion.

Mangalam is a coastal village in Tirur Taluk, Malappuram district, Kerala, India. The village is located 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) south-west to the town of Tirur, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) away from Ponnani, and 17 kilometres (11 mi) south to Tanur. Kootayi, known for its picturesque beach, is an important town in the jurisdiction of Mangalam Grama Panchayat.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kuttippuram Block Panchayat</span>

The Kuttippuram Block Panchayat is the block-level administrative body that administers the region around Kuttippuram in Malappuram district, Kerala, India. It is also one of the 15 Block Panchayats established for the proper block-level administration of Gram panchayats in the district. Established in 1962, the block's current president is Vaseema Veleri since 2020. Kuttippuram Block Panchayat lies in two assembly constituencies – Kottakkal and Tirur – both of which are part of the Ponnani parliamentary constituency. The Block is headed by a President and council, and manages 155.83 km2 of Kuttippuram block, with a population of about 229,468 within that area.
