The Michigan Senate special elections of 2021 are scheduled to take place November 2, 2021, and will fill two mid-term vacancies in the Michigan Senate. The elections will take place one year before the regularly scheduled elections of 2022. These are the last elections that will use the legislative maps drawn by Michigan's Republican-controlled legislature that was signed into law by then-Gov. Rick Snyder in 2011. [1]
Two vacancies in the Michigan Senate were created following the 2020 November elections after two members of the Michigan Senate were elected to other positions. Republican Peter Lucido was elected Macomb County Prosecutor [2] and Republican Peter MacGregor was elected Kent County Treasurer [3]
Both senators resigned effective December 31, 2020, at 11:59 P.M. [4] [5] Gov. Gretchen Whitmer set the date for the special primary election to be August 3, 2021, and the special general election November 2. [6] The deadline to file to seek the Republican or Democratic nominations for both seats was set to be April 20, and to run as non-party affiliated candidate is August 4. [7]
Macomb County is a county located in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Michigan, bordering Lake St. Clair, and is part of northern Metro Detroit. As of the 2010 census, the population was 840,978, making it the third-most populous county in the state. The county seat is Mt. Clemens. Macomb County is part of the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city of Detroit is located south of the county's southern border. Macomb County contains 27 cities, townships and villages, including three of the top ten most-populous municipalities in Michigan as of the 2010 census: Warren (#3), Sterling Heights (#4) and Clinton Township (#10). Most of this population is concentrated south of Hall Road (M-59), one of the county's main thoroughfares.

Gretchen Esther Whitmer is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 49th governor of Michigan since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
Mark Allen Hackel is a politician and the County Executive of Macomb County, Michigan. He is the first person to hold that position, which was established by a new charter for county government that voters approved in 2008. He was elected to a four-year term in 2010 and strongly re-elected in 2014 and 2018.
