The Michigan Senate special elections of 2021 are scheduled to take place November 2, 2021, and will fill two mid-term vacancies in the Michigan Senate. The elections will take place one year before the regularly scheduled elections of 2022. These are the last elections that will use the legislative maps drawn by Michigan's Republican-controlled legislature that was signed into law by then-Gov. Rick Snyder in 2011. [1]

Background

Two vacancies in the Michigan Senate were created following the 2020 November elections after two members of the Michigan Senate were elected to other positions. Republican Peter Lucido was elected Macomb County Prosecutor [2] and Republican Peter MacGregor was elected Kent County Treasurer [3]

Both senators resigned effective December 31, 2020, at 11:59 P.M. [4] [5] Gov. Gretchen Whitmer set the date for the special primary election to be August 3, 2021, and the special general election November 2. [6] The deadline to file to seek the Republican or Democratic nominations for both seats was set to be April 20, and to run as non-party affiliated candidate is August 4. [7]
