Joseph Louis Bernardin was an American Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Cincinnati from 1972 until 1982, and as Archbishop of Chicago from 1982 until his death in 1996 from pancreatic cancer. Bernardin was elevated to the cardinalate in 1983 by Pope John Paul II.
John Patrick Cardinal Cody was an American bishop and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of St. Louis, he served as Bishop of Kansas City–Saint Joseph (1956–61), Archbishop of New Orleans (1964–65), and Archbishop of Chicago (1965–82). He was named a cardinal in 1967.

Based in Kansas City, Missouri, NCR was founded by Robert Hoyt in 1964. Hoyt wanted to bring the professional standards of secular news reporting to the press that covers Catholic news, saying that "if the mayor of a city owned its only newspaper, its citizens will not learn what they need and deserve to know about its affairs". The publication, which operates outside the authority of the Catholic Church, is independently owned and governed by a lay board of directors.
Wilton Daniel Gregory is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who is the Archbishop of Washington. He was the Archbishop of Atlanta, from 2005 to 2019, the Bishop of Belleville, Illinois, from 1994 to 2004, and Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago from 1983 to 1994. He was president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) from 2001 to 2004.
Aloysius John Wycisło was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the 8th bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin from 1968 to 1983. Previously he was an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Chicago, Illinois.
