Notes

  1. In this list not included Mgr Phocas Nikwigize, Bishop Emeritus of Ruhengeri. Mgr Nikwigize was born in 1919. He was kidnapped with others near Goma on 27 November 1996 by members of the Rwandan Patriotic Army. None of the people who were kidnapped around this time were not found alive. It would have been assassinated on November 30, 1996, but the Holy See did not declare him dead because his body has not been found and there has been no eyewitness testimony to his death. However, his death has been reported on several occasions. It is inconceivable that he is still alive but that he has not been seen since November 1996.

Cardinal (Catholic Church) Senior official of the Catholic Church

Cardinals are the most senior members of the clergy of the Catholic Church, being second in precedence only to the Pope. They are appointed to the rank of cardinal in addition to their existing position within the Church. Collectively, they constitute the College of Cardinals, and are appointed for life.

College of Cardinals Body of all cardinals of the Catholic Church

The College of Cardinals, or more formally the Sacred College of Cardinals, is the body of all cardinals of the Catholic Church. As of 10 August 2021, its current membership is 219. Cardinals are appointed by the pope for life. Changes in life expectancy partly account for the increases in the size of the college.

Monsignor Honorific form of address for certain Catholic clergy

Monsignor is an honorific form of address for some members of the clergy, usually of the Roman Catholic Church, including honorary prelates and canons. Unlike the rank of bishop or cardinal, and despite having distinctive garb and headgear, "Monsignor" is a form of address, not an appointment. Properly speaking, one cannot be "made a monsignor" or be "the monsignor of a parish". The title or form of address is associated with certain papal awards, which Pope Paul VI reduced to three classes: those of Protonotary Apostolic, Honorary Prelate, and Chaplain of His Holiness.
