The 2016 Richmond City Council elections took place in Richmond, Virginia on November 8, 2016. [1] The election determined the Richmond City Council members from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2020.

The city's population in the 2020 census was 226,610, up from 204,214 in 2010, making it Virginia's fourth-most populous city. The Richmond metropolitan area, with over 1.3 million residents, is the Commonwealth's third-most populous.

The district is currently represented by Democrat Jennifer McClellan, who was elected to the seat after she defeated Republican Leon Benjamin in the February 21, 2023, special election, caused by the death of incumbent Donald McEachin (D) on November 28, 2022.
The 2009 Virginia gubernatorial election took place in Virginia on November 3, 2009. The incumbent Governor, Democrat Tim Kaine, was not eligible to run due to term limits established by the Virginia Constitution, though others in the state's executive branch were not restricted. Republican Bob McDonnell was elected as Governor as part of a Republican sweep. Republican Bill Bolling was reelected as lieutenant governor, and Republican Ken Cuccinelli was elected as attorney general. The winners were inaugurated on January 16, 2010, and served until January 11, 2014.

Kathy J. Byron is an American politician. She was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1997 as a Republican, representing the 22nd district in the Virginia Piedmont, consisting of parts of Bedford, Campbell and Franklin Counties and the city of Lynchburg. In September 2023, Byron resigned from the Virginia House after being appointed as Deputy Director for External Affairs at the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement.
Rev. Delores L. McQuinn is an American politician of the Democratic Party. She is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 81st district, made up of parts of Chesterfield, Henrico, and Charles City Counties and the City of Richmond. She was previously a member of the Richmond City Council.

Municipal elections were held in Alberta, Canada on Monday, October 21, 2013. Mayors (reeves), councillors (aldermen), and trustees were elected to office in 16 of the 17 cities, all 108 towns, all 93 villages, all 5 specialized municipalities, all 64 municipal districts, 3 of the 8 improvement districts, and the advisory councils of the 3 special areas. The City of Lloydminster is on the Saskatchewan schedule (quadrennial), and held elections on October 24, 2012, while 5 improvement districts have no councils and are led solely by the Minister of Municipal Affairs. Since the 2010 municipal elections, portions of Lac La Biche County and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo formed Improvement District No. 349, and the villages of New Norway and Tilley were dissolved. From 1968 to 2013, provincial legislation has required every municipality to hold elections every three years. The Alberta Legislative Assembly passed a bill on December 5, 2012, amending the Local Authorities Election Act. Starting with the 2013 elections, officials are elected for a four-year term, and municipal elections are moved to a four-year cycle.
Michael B. Watson is an American politician. A Republican, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2011. He represented the 93rd district, made up of the city of Williamsburg and parts of the counties of James City and York and the city of Newport News on the Virginia Peninsula.

In an officially nonpartisan, three-way race, Levar Stoney, the former state Secretary of the Commonwealth defeated Jack Berry, former Hanover County Administrator, and Joe Morrissey, former delegate of the Virginia House of Delegates. Former councilperson, Michelle Mosby, finished in a distant third. On January 1, 2017, Stoney took office as the 80th mayor of Richmond, Virginia.
Edward Ellis Haddock was an American physician and politician. He served as mayor of Richmond, Virginia from 1952 to 1954, and in the Virginia State Senate for eight years (1955–1963) before retiring to concentrate on his general practice. He also served on the Richmond City Council for four years, and unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Congress from Virginia's 3rd congressional district in 1965.

Richmond, Virginia, held a general election on November 3, 2020. Voters elected the mayor of Richmond, Virginia, members of the Richmond City Council, and several other local officials. The incumbent, Levar Stoney, who was elected in 2016, ran for reelection, facing five challengers. While local races in Virginia are officially nonpartisan elections, four candidates identified with the Democratic party while Griffin ran as an independent. Stoney won the most votes in six out of nine city council districts, and therefore won reelection. In order to win election, a candidate must receive the most votes in five or more districts.
The 2023 Virginia's 4th congressional district special election was a special election to the U.S. House of Representatives that was held to fill Virginia's 4th congressional district for the remainder of the 118th United States Congress. The seat became vacant after incumbent Democrat Donald McEachin died on November 28, 2022, of colorectal cancer. State Senator Jennifer McClellan was declared the victor shortly after the polls closed, winning in a landslide against her Republican opponent.
