The Baliem Valley is a valley of the Central Highlands in Western New Guinea. Specifically in Highland Papua, Indonesia. The main town in the valley is Wamena, which lies on the Baliem River. The valley is about 80 km in length by 20 km in width and lies at an altitude of about 1,600–1,700 metres (5,200–5,600 ft), with a population of over 200,000.

The Dani or Baliem Valley languages are a family of clearly related Trans–New Guinea languages spoken by the Dani and related peoples in the Baliem Valley in the Highland Papua, Indonesia. Foley (2003) considers their TNG status to be established. They may be most closely related to the languages of Paniai Lakes, but this is not yet clear. Capell (1962) had posited that their closest relatives were the Kwerba languages, which Ross (2005) rejects.

The Papua conflict is an ongoing conflict in Western New Guinea between Indonesia and the Free Papua Movement. Subsequent to the withdrawal of the Dutch administration from the Netherlands New Guinea in 1962 and implementation of Indonesian administration in 1963, the Free Papua Movement has conducted a low-intensity guerrilla war against Indonesia through the targeting of its military, police, and civilian populations.

The Yali and Dani word for "lands of the east" is "yali", from where the Yali took it, without it being a self-identification for their tribe.

Nduga Regency is one of the regencies (kabupaten) in the Indonesian province of Highland Papua. Nduga Regency was created on 4 January 2008 by separation from Jayawijaya Regency in accordance with Law No. 6/2008. It covers an area of 12,941 km2, and had a population of 79,053 at the 2010 Census and 106,533 at the 2020 Census; th official estimate as at mid 2022 was 109,630 - comprising 59,587 males and 50,043 females. The administrative centre is at the town of Kenyam.

It had a population of 196,085 at the 2010 Census, and 269,553 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 277,923 - comprising 144,500 males and 133,423 females. The Nduga massacre was a shooting of construction workers that occurred on 1 December 2018, in Nduga Regency, Papua, Indonesia. The shooting is considered to be part of the Papuan conflict. The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) acknowledged responsibility and the Indonesian government labeled the attack a massacre.

Kenyam is a town and district in Nduga Regency, Highland Papua, Indonesia. It is the capital of the regency. Its population as at mid 2022 was 6,394.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nogolait shooting</span> 2022 mass murder in West Papua

On 16 July 2022, a group of around 20 gunmen entered the Kampung Nonggolait in Nduga Regency, Highland Papua, Indonesia. The attackers opened fire on a grocer, and then shot seven traders riding on a freight truck. Four bystanders were also shot.

The Nduga hostage crisis began on 7 February 2023 when Free Papua Movement insurgents attacked a plane and took its pilot and all five passengers hostage. While the passengers were soon released, New Zealander pilot Philip Mark Mehrtens remains in captivity.

Paro is a district situated in Nduga Regency, Highland Papua. Paro is the district's capital.
