The federal government of Nigeria is composed of three distinct branches: the legislative, the executive, and the judicial, whose powers are vested and bestowed upon them by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the National Assembly, the president, and lastly the federal courts, which includes the Supreme Court which is regarded as the highest court in Nigeria. One of the major functions of the constitution is that it provides for separation and balance of powers among the three branches and aims to prevent the repetition of past mistakes made by the government Other functions of the constitution include a division of power between the federal government and the states, and protection of various individual liberties of the nation's citizens.
Nigeria is a federation of 36 states. Each of the 36 states is a semi-autonomous political unit that shares powers with the federal government as enumerated under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is the capital territory of Nigeria, and it is in this territory that the capital city of Abuja is located. The FCT is not a state. It is a territory of the Federal Government, administered by Ministers of Government appointed by the President who supervises by the administration of the territory. Each state is subdivided into local government areas (LGAs). There are 774 local governments in Nigeria. Under the constitution, the 36 states are co-equal but not supreme because sovereignty resides with the federal government. The constitution can be amended by the National Assembly, but each amendment must be ratified by two-thirds of the 36 states of the federation.
The Peoples Democratic Party [sic] is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Nigeria, along with its main rival, the All Progressives Congress.
The National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a bicameral legislature established under section 4 of the Nigerian Constitution. It consists of a Senate with 109 members and a 360-member House of Representatives. The body, modeled after the federal Congress of the United States, is supposed to guarantee equal representation with 3 senators to each 36 states irrespective of size in the Senate plus 1 senator representing the Federal Capital Territory and single-member district, plurality voting in the House of Representatives. The National Assembly, like many other organs of the Nigerian federal government is based in Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Senate is the upper chamber of Nigeria's bicameral legislature, the National Assembly. The National Assembly is the nation's legislature and has the power to make laws, as summarized in chapter one, section four of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. The lower chamber is the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives is the lower chamber of Nigeria's bicameral National Assembly. The Senate is the upper chamber.
The Third Republic was the planned republican government of Nigeria in 1992 which was to be governed by the Third Republican constitution. In the Third Republic, there were democratically elected state governors and state assemblies and a democratically elected federal legislature. The republic was however not fully democratic as there was no democratically elected civilian president. The then military president Ibrahim Babangida's supposed transition eventually turned out to be a ploy to keep executive powers and grant the National Assembly limited legislative powers. Hence all laws passed by the Senate and House of Representatives will have to pass the National Defence and Security Council of Nigeria and finally approved by the President. So while Babangida changed the usual style adopted by preceding military leaders from Head of State to President, he will continue to postpone presidential elections and eventually annul the ultimate one held on 12 June 1993. The Third Republic can thus be described as half military and half civilian.
The Constitution of Nigeria is the written supreme law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigeria has had many constitutions. Its current form was enacted on 29 May 1999 and inaugurated the Fourth Nigerian Republic.
The Nigerian National Assembly delegation from Abia comprises three Senators representing Abia Central, Abia South, and Abia North, and eight Representatives representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South, Bende, Isuikwato/Umunneochi, Arochukwu/Ohafia, Aba North/Aba South, Ukwa East/Ukwa West, Isiala Ngwa North/South and Obingwa/Osisioma/Ugbunagbo.
The Nigerian National Assembly delegation from Oyo comprises three Senators representing Oyo South, Oyo Central, and Oyo North. It has fourteen Representatives representing the following federal constituencies: Ona-Ara/Egbeda; Iseyin/Kajola/Iwajowa/Itesiwaju; Ibadan North- East/South- East; Lagelu/Akinyele; Ibarapa East/Ido; Ibadan North, Oluyole; Atisbo/Saki East/Saki West; Ibadan North West/South West; Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North; Afijio/Atiba/Oyo East/Oyo West; Ogo-oluwa/Surulere Oluyole; Ogbomosho-North/South/Orire; and Olurunssogo/Orelope/Irepo.
The Nigerian National Assembly delegation from Kogi comprises three Senators representing Kogi Central, Kogi East, and Kogi West, and nine Representatives representing Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ankpa, Bassa, Dekina, Ibaji, Idah, Igalamela-Odolu, Ijumu, Kabba/Bunu, Koton Karfe, Lokoja, Mopa-Muro, Ofu, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi, Okene, Olamaboro, Omala, Yagba East, and Yagba West.
The Nigerian National Assembly delegation from Plateau comprises three Senators representing Plateau South, Plateau Central, and Plateau North, and eight Representatives representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom, Jos North/Bassa, Jos South/Jos East, Langtang North/Langtang South, Mangu/Bokkos, Mikang/Shendam/Qua'an-Pan, Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam and Wase. Prior to the evolution of the Fourth Nigerian Republic, there existed the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Republics respectively before it. In the Third Nigerian Republic, there were the senatorial districts of Plateau North, Plateau East and Plateau West. The House of Representatives constituencies consisted of the individual Local Government Areas of the state qualified at that time as Federal constituencies.
Adamu Muhammad Sidi-Ali is a Nigerian politician and farmer. He has run successfully for the offices of Chairman and for the House of Representatives beginning in the early 2000s. In December 2014, he emerged again as the Senatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2015 elections. He is a native of Abaji Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory.
Nnenna Ijeoma Elendu Ukeje is a Nigerian politician who was the representative for Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State, Nigeria. Having had a successful career in the private sector, Nnenna was elected to the House of Representatives in 2007, She was re-elected to the position on 29 May 2011 and also served as the Chairman house committee on foreign affairs. In the 2015 general elections she was also re-elected to the house of representative and once again appointed as the house committee chairman on foreign affairs.
Alhassan Ado Garba popularly known as Alhassan Doguwa is the Majority Leader of House of Representatives of Nigerian today. He is an All Progressive Congress (APC) member representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State.
Onyewuchi Francis Ezenwa is the senator representing Imo east senatorial district in the 9th assembly and the former member of the Nigerian Federal House of Representatives He represented the Owerri-Municipal/Owerri-North/West-Federal Constituency of Imo State under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party in the Federal House of Representatives
Rt. Hon. Obinna Chidoka is an indigene of Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. He is a sociology graduate of the University of Lagos and an honorable member of the House of Representatives, representing Idemili North and Idemili South Federal Constituency in the 8th Nigerian National Assembly. He is the Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Habitat.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is a political party in Nigeria. As of 2022, Ralph Nwosu is the National Chairman. There are 2 ADC members currently in the Nigerian National Assembly. They are all members of the House of Representatives and represent constituencies in Kogi State. There are no ADC members currently in the Nigerian Senate.
