Tiana language, also known as Tobelo Tiana, [1] [2] is an unexplored language spoken in the province of North Maluku in Indonesia, in two villages on the coast of Halmahery, namely Sarau and Tobelos (South Ibu district in West Halmahera Regency). According to reports, this language was created from a mixture of the Galela and the Tobelo languages. [1] [2] [3]

The speakers itself claims to be descended from the Galela people, but this is not evidenced in their language. Tiana is closely related to the Gamkonora and Waioli languages, sharing 60% of its basic vocabulary with them. [4] [5] This language is classified as a member of the Sahu language family, which is formed together with Sahu (pa’disua-tala’i), Waioli, and Gamkonora. [6]

According to the publication Perencanaan bahasa Gamkonora berbasis ekologi bahasa (2013), Tiana is the dominant language in both villages. However, the Tobelos villages are also inhabited by speakers of Tabaru (Tobaru), and in the Sarau village, besides Tiana, the Waioli language is also spoken. [7]

This language has not been explained in detail in the literature. [8]
