Yueyang, formerly known as Yuezhou or Yochow,is a prefecture-level city on the eastern shores of Dongting Lake and the Yangtze river in the northeastern corner of Hunan Province in the People's Republic of China.
Yueyang has an administrative area of 14,896 km2 (5,751 sq mi) and the city proper,304 km2 (117 sq mi). The population was 5,051,922 at the 2020 Chinese census whom 1,134,058 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made up of Yueyanglou District and Yunxi District,Junshan District not being conurbated. Yueyang is the only international trade port city in Hunan and a famous port city in China,at the same time,Yueyang's comprehensive economic strength ranks of Hunan second only to Changsha,the provincial capital.
The city's most famous attractions are the Yueyang Tower and Dongting Lake. The most famous food is Dongting lake silver fish (洞庭银鱼).[ citation needed ]
In 2021,the city's permanent resident population was 5,051,922,a decrease of 424,162 from the end of last year.
The Yueyang prefecture is made up of six outlying districts,two special districts and the city proper. The six city districts are Huarong,Linxiang,Xiangyin,Pingjiang,Miluo and Yueyang County. The two special (smaller) districts are Junshan and Yunxi,which used to be part of Yueyang city proper but were separated into their own special districts for administrative purposes.

The area now called Yueyang has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. It was originally established as a prefecture called Hanchang (Hanchang) by Sun Wu in 210 AD during the Three Kingdoms period. It was called Ximi during the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period under the Chu state. [5]
Under the Song dynasty (AD 960 –AD 1279) it was heavily fortified,with walls 4 miles (6.4 km) in circumference,and became the seat of the military prefecture of Yueyang,whence its present name. During the Taiping Rebellion,its capture by the rebels in AD 1852 was an important stage in their advance up the Yangtze River valley to Nanjing. At the time of the foundation of the Republic of China in AD 1911,it became a county,taking the name Yueyang.
Yueyang Tower is an ancient Chinese tower in Yueyang,Hunan Province,on the shore of Lake Dongting. Alongside the Pavilion of Prince Teng and Yellow Crane Tower,it is one of the Three Great Towers of Jiangnan,and attracts many tourists. [5] It is a famous place for tourism.
The current CPC Party Secretary of Yueyang is Wang Yi'ou and the current mayor is Li Aiwu. [6]
Yueyang has two Yangtze River crossings,the Jingyue Yangtze River Bridge and Dongting Lake Bridge.
The city is served by Yueyang Sanhe Airport.

Dongting Lake is a large,shallow lake in northeastern Hunan Province,China. It is a flood basin of the Yangtze River,so its volume depends on the season. The provinces of Hubei and Hunan are named after their location relative to the lake:Hubei means "North of the Lake" and Hunan,"South of the Lake".

Yueyang Tower is an ancient Chinese pavilion in Yueyang,Hunan Province,on the shore of Lake Dongting. Alongside the Pavilion of Prince Teng and Yellow Crane Tower,it is one of the Three Great Towers of Jiangnan. Yueyang Tower became famous for Memorial to Yueyang Tower (岳阳楼记) written by Fan Zhongyan,an eminent scholar and statesman of the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127) in China.
Pingjiang County is a county in the northeast of Hunan province,China. It is the easternmost county-level division of the prefecture-level city of Yueyang.
Yueyanglou District is one of three urban districts in Yueyang City,Hunan province,China;it is also the 3rd most populous district in the province. The district is located in the middle part of the city proper of Yueyang,it is on the lake of Dongting's southeastern side,the lake flows into Yangtze in the north western outer margin of the district. The district is bordered by Jianli County of Hubei and Junshan District to the north,surrounded by Yueyang County to the west,the south and the southeast,Yunxi District to the northeast. Yueyanglou District covers 464.55 km2 (179.36 sq mi),as of 2015,it had a registered population of 514,100. The district is located in the west of the city proper,on the northern shore of Dongting Lake and the southwestern bank of Yangtze River. It is bordered by Huarong County to the west,Nan County to the south,Yueyang County to the east,cross the Yangtze to the north by Jianli County of Hubei. Junshan District covers 627.90 km2 (242.43 sq mi),as of 2015,it had a registered population of 243,106. Yunxi District is one of three urban districts in Yueyang City,Hunan province,China;it is also the 4th smallest district by population in the province. The district is located in the east of the city proper of Yueyang. Yunxi District is located on the southeastern shore of Yangtze River,the Lake of Dongting flows into the Yangtze in the south western outer margin of the district. It is bordered by Jianli County of Hubei across the Yangtze to the west and the northwest,by Linxiang City to the east,by Yueyanglou District and Yueyang County to the south. Linxiang is a county-level city in Hunan province,China,it is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Yueyang. Linxiang is located at the northeastern edge of Hunan province,on the southeastern (right) bank of the Yangtze River,which lies to the east of the city proper. Linxiang is bordered to the northwest and the north across the Yangtze by Jianli County and Honghu City of Hubei,to the east by Chibi City,Chongyang and Tongcheng Counties of Hubei,to the south and southwest by Yueyang County,to the west by Yunxi District. Xiangyin County is a county in Hunan Province,China,it is under the administration of Yueyang City. Located on the southeastern shores of Lake Dongting,the Xiang River runs south to north through the middle lands of the county,the Zi River merges into Dongting in the westeastern margin. Xiangyin is bordered by Yueyang County,Yuanjiang City to the north,Heshan District of Yiyang to the west,Wangcheng District of Changsha to the south,Miluo City to the east. Gong Weiguo is a former Chinese politician who spent most of his career in south China's Hunan province. He was investigated by the Chinese Communist Party's anti-graft agency in April 2015. Previously he served as the Deputy Communist Party Secretary and Mayor of Linxiang.
Rongjiawan is a town and the county seat of Yueyang in Hunan,China. The town was reformed through the amalgamation of Chengguan Town,Lujiao Town and Matang Town on November 30,2015. The town has an area of 217.42 km2 (83.95 sq mi) with a population of 161,100. Yunxi Subdistrict is a subdistrict and the seat of Yunxi District in Yueyang Prefecture-level City,Hunan,China. It was reformed as a town through the amalgamation of Chengjiao Township,Yunxi Town and the former Yunxi Town on November 30,2015 and reorganized as a subdistrict in 2017. The subdistrict has an area of 176.8 km2 (68.3 sq mi) with a population of 103,700. Through the amalgamation of village-level divisions in 2016,the town has 13 villages and 13 communities. Its seat is Fengtaishan Community.
Wulipai Subdistrict is a subdistrict and the seat of Yueyanglou District in Yueyang Prefecture-level City,Hunan,China. It was originally a subdistrict in South District of Yueyang and formed in 1984. On March 16,1996,the South District ceased as a district,it was merged to the newly established Yueyanglou District. The subdistrict has an area of about 7 km2 (2.7 sq mi) with a population of 66,043. The subdistrict has nine communities under its jurisdiction,its seat is Wulipai Community.
Liulinzhou is a subdistrict and the seat of Junshan District in Yueyang Prefecture-level City,Hunan,China. The subdistrict was reorganized through the amalgamation of Xicheng Subdistrict and the former Liuinzhou Town on November 20. It has an area of about 214.7 km2 (82.9 sq mi) with a population of 71,100.
The Yueyang–Linwu Expressway commonly abbreviated as Yuelin Expressway,is an expressway in Hunan province,China that connects Yueyang and Linwu County. It is 539 kilometres (335 mi) in length. It is the section of G0421 Xuchang–Guangzhou Expressway in Hunan. Its northern terminus at Jingyue Yangtze River Bridge and its southern terminus at Huangsha Town of Yizhang County.
