Qingyuan,formerly romanized as Tsingyun, [a] is a prefecture-level city in northern Guangdong province,China,on the banks of the Bei or North River. During the 2020 census,its total population was 3,969,473,out of whom 1,738,424 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of urbanized Qingcheng and Qingxin districts. [7] The primary spoken language is Cantonese. Covering 19,015 km2 (7,342 sq mi),Qingyuan is Guangdong's largest prefecture-level division by land area,and it borders Guangzhou and Foshan to the south,Shaoguan to the east and northeast,Zhaoqing to the south and southwest,and Hunan province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the north. [1] The urban core is surrounded by mountainous areas but is directly connected with Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta by Highway 107.
Qingyuan was a prefecture during Northern and Southern dynasties. However,the administration status of Qingyuan was downgraded to a county in the tenth year of the Kaihuang Era of the Sui dynasty (A.D. 590). Since then,until the formation of the Republic of China in 1911,Qingyuan was governed by Guangzhou prefecture (廣州府).
Under the Qing,the area was known as Qingyuan County. [6] It was later promoted to prefecture-level city status.
Qingyuan's administrative area ranges in latitude from 23°26' 56" to 25°11' 40" N,and in longitude from 111°55' 17" to 113°55' 34" E; [1] its urban area is located just north of the Tropic of Cancer,about 60 km (37 mi) from the urban area of Guangzhou and 200 km (120 mi) from both Hong Kong and Macau. Its area of over 19,000 km2 (7,300 sq mi) accounts for 10.6% of the total provincial area. [1] Qingyuan contains part of the southern Nan Ling,and more than half of the area is mountainous,and elevations increase from southeast to northwest. Bordering prefectures are Guangzhou and Foshan to the southeast,Zhaoqing to the southwest,Shaoguan to the north and northeast,Hezhou (Guangxi) to the west,and Yongzhou and Chenzhou (Hunan) to the north. Qingyuan has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate,with an average annual temperature of 20.7 °C (69.3 °F),1,900 mm (75 in) of rainfall,1662.2 hours of sunshine,and a frost-free period of 314.4 days. [8]
Qingyuan is a major economic and transportation hub. The Beijing–Guangzhou Railway,National Highways 106 and 107,and the Bei or North River cross through the city. The maritime infrastructure in Qingyuan plays a vital role in transporting goods to other regional centers in Guangdong,Hong Kong,and Macao. The major ports are Qingyuan Port,Yingde Port,Lianzhou Port and Yangshan Port.
According to the 2010 Census,Qingyuan has a population of 3,698,394 inhabitants, [9] 550,715 more than in 2000 (an annual growth rate of 1.63%). Han Chinese comprise over 95% of the entire population,while there are some areas inhabited by the Zhuang and Yao minorities.
Qingyuan's attractions include Niuyuzui,Feilai Temple,Feixia Scenic Spots,Baojing Palace of Yingde,Taihe Ancient Cave of Qingxin,Sankeng Hot Spring in Qingxin County,Huanghua Lake in Fogang,Little Biejiang of Lianyang,Peak Shikengkong in Yangshan County,Underground River of Lianzhou,Huangteng Gorge,Three Gorges of Huangchuan and Yinzhan Hot Springs.
The provincial and municipal administration is located in Qingcheng District. It oversees one other district,two county-level cities,four counties,and one economic development district.

Qingyuan is served by Qingyuan railway station,opened in 2009 on the Wuhan–Guangzhou high-speed railway. It is located some distance east of the city.

Guangdong is a coastal province in South China, on the north shore of the South China Sea. The provincial capital is Guangzhou. With a population of 126.84 million across a total area of about 179,800 km2 (69,400 sq mi), Guangdong is China's most populous province and its 15th-largest by area, as well as the third-most populous country subdivision in the world.
Meizhou is a prefecture-level city in eastern Guangdong province, China. It has an area of 15,864.51 km2 (6,125.32 sq mi), and a population of 3,873,239 as of the 2020 census. It comprises Meijiang District, Meixian District, Xingning City and five counties. Its built-up or metro area made up of two urban districts was home to 992,351 inhabitants.
Zhaoqing, alternately romanized as Shiuhing, is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province, China. As of the 2020 census, its population was 4,113,594, with 1,553,109 living in the built-up area made of Duanzhou, Dinghu and Gaoyao. The prefectural seat—except the Seven Star Crags—is fairly flat, but thickly forested mountains lie just outside its limits. Numerous rice paddies and aquaculture ponds are found on the outskirts of the city. Sihui and the southern districts of the prefecture are considered part of the Pearl River Delta.
Shaoguan is a prefecture-level city in northern Guangdong Province (Yuebei), South China, bordering Hunan to the northwest and Jiangxi to the northeast. It is home to the mummified remains of the sixth Zen Buddhist patriarch Huineng. Its built-up area made up of Zhenjiang, Wujiang and Qujiang urban conurbated districts was home to 1,028,460 inhabitants as of the 2020 census.
Foshan alternately romanized as Fatshan is a prefecture-level city in central Guangdong Province, China. The entire prefecture covers 3,848 km2 (1,486 sq mi) and had a population of 9,498,863 as of the 2020 census. The city is part of the western side of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis, a conurbation housing 86,100,000 inhabitants, making it the biggest urban area of the world.
Jieyang is a prefecture-level city in eastern Guangdong Province (Yuedong), People's Republic of China, part of the Chaoshan region whose people speak Chaoshan Min distinct from neighbouring Yue speakers. It is historically important as the hometown of many overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. It borders Shantou to the east, Chaozhou to the northeast, Meizhou to the north, Shanwei to the west, and looks out to the South China Sea to the south.
Yingde is a historical city in the north of Guangdong Province, China. The city is on the Bei River, a tributary of the Pearl River. Administratively, it is part of the Qingyuan prefecture-level city.
Heyuan is a prefecture-level city of Guangdong province in the People's Republic of China. As of the 2020 census, its population was 2,837,686 whom 1,051,993 lived in the built-up area made of Yuancheng urban District and Dongyuan County largely being urbanized. Zijin County itself is quickly being conurbated in the agglomeration. The majority of the people are Hakka. The city includes many rainforests and the largest lake in Guangdong: Xinfengjiang Reservoir. The literal meaning of the city's name is "origin of the river". It has recently been officially titled as the "Hometown of the Dinosaur in China", due to the thousands of dinosaur egg fossils that have been unearthed in its vicinity.
Sanshui District, formerly romanized as Samshui, is an urban district of the prefecture-level city of Foshan in Guangdong province, China. It had a population of 622,645 as of the 2010 census. It is known for the "Samsui women", emigrants who labour in Singapore, and for a large fireworks explosion in 2008.
Yunfu, formerly romanized as Wanfow, and historically known as Dong'an, which was formerly romanized as Tong On, from 1578 to 1913, is a prefecture-level city in western Guangdong province, People's Republic of China. It borders Zhaoqing to the north, Foshan to the east, Jiangmen to the southeast, Yangjiang to the south, Maoming to the southwest, and the autonomous region of Guangxi to the west. The city spans an area of 7,786.64 square kilometres (3,006.44 sq mi), and has a population of 2,383,400 according to a 2021 publication by the city government.
Yangjiang, alternately romanized via Cantonese as Yeungkong, is a prefecture-level city in southwestern Guangdong Province in the People's Republic of China. It borders Maoming to the west, Yunfu to the north, Jiangmen to the east, and looks out to the South China Sea to the south. The local dialect is the Gaoyang dialect, a branch of Yue Chinese. During the 2020 census, its population was 2,602,959 inhabitants of whom 1,292,987 lived in the built-up and largely urbanized area comprising Jiangcheng District and Yangdong County.
Conghua District, alternately romanized as Tsungfa, is one of 11 urban districts and the northernmost district of the prefecture-level city of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, China. Conghua connects the Pearl River Delta with the mountainous area of northern Guangdong. Within China, it is known for its hot springs and lychees. Covering an area of 1,974.15 km2 (762.22 sq mi), it is the largest urban district of Guangzhou by area, with a population of 717,684 in 2020. Its GDP was RMB41.668 billion in 2018.
Yizhang County is a county in Hunan Province, China, it is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Chenzhou. Yizhang County covers 2,142.7 km2 (827.3 sq mi). As of 2015, it had a registered population of 644,300 and a resident population of 589,400.
Wengyuan is a county in the north of Guangdong Province, China, bordering Jiangxi to the northeast. It is under the administration of Shaoguan City. It has a population of 421,756 in 2019, 99.55% of whom speak Hakka. Yao languages are spoken in some parts of the county. 0.616% of the population belongs to minority ethnic groups, most of them Yao.
Longmen County, alternately romanized as Lungmoon, is a county of Guangdong, China, administered as part of the prefecture-level city of Huizhou. In 2020, Longmen County had a population of 319,183 residing in an area of 2,295 square kilometers (886 sq mi).
Fogang County is a county of north-central Guangdong province, People's Republic of China. It is under the administration of Qingyuan City, and is connected to major cities in Guangdong by public highways and toll roads. The closest aviation hub is Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN).
Yangshan County is a county in the northwest of Guangdong Province, China, bordering Hunan province to the north. It is under the administration of the city of Qingyuan.
Qingcheng is a district of Qingyuan, Guangdong province, China.
Lianzhou, formerly Lian County or Lianxian, is a county-level city in northern Guangdong Province, China, and is the northernmost county-level division of the prefecture-level city of Qingyuan. It is known as the host city of the Lianzhou International Photography Festival (LIPF) and as a historic and cultural landmark of Guangdong Province.
Yangchun, alternately romanized as Yeungchun, is a county-level city in southwestern Guangdong, China, administered as a part of the prefecture-level city of Yangjiang. Yangchun has an area of 4,055 km2 (1,566 sq mi) and had approximately 1.05 million inhabitants in 2003.
