The 2014 Murfreesboro mayoral election took place on April 15, 2014. Incumbent Democratic mayor Tommy Bragg decided not to run for re-election to a third term. [1]
Republican candidate Shane McFarland defeated Vice Mayor Ron Washington, becoming the youngest person elected as mayor in Murfreesboro history. [2] The mayoral election coincided with other elections, including races for Murfreesboro City Council.

Murfreesboro has been a Republican stronghold. In the 2016 presidential election, Murfreesboro voted for Donald Trump by 19.0% and voted for Bill Lee by 9.6% in the 2018 gubernatorial election. During this time, Phil Bredesen was the most recent Democrat to win Murfreesboro by 0.4% in the 2018 senate election. [8]

Murfreesboro has been a Republican stronghold. In the 2020 presidential election, Murfreesboro voted for Donald Trump by 8.4%, voted for Bill Hagerty by 12.8% in the 2020 senate election, and overwhelmingly voted for Bill Lee in the 2022 gubernatorial election. [14]

Rutherford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located in Middle Tennessee. As of a 2021 estimate, the population was 352,182, making it the fifth-most populous county in Tennessee. A study conducted by the University of Tennessee projects Rutherford County to become the third largest county in Tennessee by population by 2050. Its county seat is Murfreesboro, which is also the geographic center of Tennessee. As of 2010, it is the center of population of Tennessee. Rutherford County is included in the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Bill Ketron, Jr. is a Tennessee politician who was the Mayor of Rutherford County, previously serving as a member of the Tennessee Senate for the 13th district, which was composed of Lincoln, Marshall, and Maury counties, as well as part of Rutherford County from 2003 to his resignation in 2018. He won the August 2 general election for mayor and assumed office on September 1, 2018, resigning from the Senate on the previous day. In the May 3, 2022 Republican primary, Ketron lost reelection to former state representative Joe Carr, who went on to win the general election to succeed him.

Representative Carr was first elected as a state representative from the 48th legislative district in 2008 for the 106th Tennessee General Assembly. He served from 2008 through 2014 before stepping down to run against Senator Lamar Alexander in the Tennessee Republican Primary. Representative Carr ran an unsuccessful campaign for the United States Senate in the Republican primary, challenging incumbent Republican Lamar Alexander. On May 3, 2022, Carr won the Republican nomination for Rutherford County Mayor, and he went on to win the general election on August 4, 2022.

Shane Reeves is an American businessman, pharmacist and politician who is the State Senator for the 14th District of Tennessee, which is composed of Bedford County, Moore County, Lincoln County, Marshall County, and part of Rutherford County. Reeves campaigned as a conservative Republican in the Tennessee State Senate District 14 Special Election in 2018. The special election was mandated because of a vacant seat created by Jim Tracy's acceptance of Tennessee Director for Rural Development with the Trump Administration. Jim Tracy endorsed Shane Reeves. Prior to entering politics, Reeves co-owned Reeves-Sain Drug Store in Murfreesboro, TN, and after selling in 2015, he founded Twelvestone Health Partners in 2016.
